Sexual Assault is when one’s being is violated by another in a way one deems “sexual.” Approximately 1 in every 5 women have been the victim of attempted or completed rape, and out of these, 1 in every 3 victims have experienced this before the age of 20. For men, around 1 in every 4 will have been the victim of sexual violence in their lifetime. In the US alone, it is reported that around 81% of women and 43% of men have experienced a form of sexual harassment or assault in their lifetime. These statistics are hard to digest, not just because of how many people are hurt, but of how young many of the victims are. As of this year, 1 in every 4 girls under the age of 18, and 1 in every 13 boys under the age of 18 has been the victim of unwanted sexual advances. If you know more than 5 women and 4 men, you may know someone who will be, or has been, the victim to sexual assault.
Now, how can you help? This month, April, is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, or SAAM, which encourages people to speak up about their pasts, spread information about places one can find help, and bring light to the many people who have been a victim to some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. To help out, you can share places that are for recovery, along with places such as Planned Parenthood, in small to extreme cases. You can also help out by just being there for someone, no need to ask questions, if you are just there to support someone, that can go a long way.
Finally, if you have been a victim to any form of sexual assault, know that you are not alone, and can find help. Here are some places to contact if you ever find yourself needing help:

This year, Easter Sunday falls on the 20th of this month. Most people know Easter as the rabbit and dyed egg holiday, but it is much more than that! According to Christianity, Jesus Christ came back to life three days after his death, and that day is now celebrated as Easter. Though this is not to say other religions don’t believe Easter has other significance or origins. One popular way of celebrating this holiday is by dyeing eggs in bright and cheerful colours, such as yellow and pink. The eggs represent the coming rebirth and new life, which tie back to Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Though we know bunnies are mammals and don’t lay eggs, according to legend, they would lay and decorate eggs that they would then hide for the good children each year, which has led to rabbits being associated with the holiday. The act of hidden Easter eggs also comes from the legend. This Easter, if you’ve been good, the Easter Bunny will hide some eggs for you to find!

Arbor Day is celebrated on different days depending on where you live, and for people in the state of New York, it is celebrated on the last Friday of April. So, this year, it is on the 25th of April. This holiday originates in 1872, when J. Sterling Morton proposed a day for planting trees to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture. He advocated for people to plant trees and on the first Arbor Day, a million trees were planted in Nebraska. It’s a day set aside for planting trees (obviously) and has seen huge amounts of success, with each Arbor Day seeing millions of trees planted. But why trees? Trees may not be the most efficient at filtering CO2 out of the atmosphere, but they provide a strong foundation to biodiversity in many environments. They can control soil erosion and many products we use in our daily lives are made from trees.

Are you aware of the current socio-political state of the United States? Well you should be! On Saturday, April 5th, a protest will be held against President Donald Trump’s actions in government (including policies) and Elon Musk’s support in said government. Multiple cities are participating in this protest, but it will mainly be occurring in Washington D.C., with the clear message of “Hands Off!” It’s a way for people to tell the government that they don’t support their actions and their words. If you were to want to view this protest, an organized protest will occur in Bryant Park, from 1-3pm. If you’d like to join, you can register using this link.
