Hi everyone! My name is Luis Familia, and I am honored to be the incoming principal at Gotham Tech, which I envision as the future premier destination for Robotics and STEM education for all of you. With over 13 years of experience in the NYC Department of Education, I was an Assistant Principal at a large CTE school in Midtown Manhattan, I am excited to take on this role. It is essential that we work collaboratively to maintain a culturally responsive school environment where all your voices can be heard. As we look toward the next two months to wrap up the school year, we will hit the ground running. Together, we will build on the strengths of our current school and identify our short-term and long-term goals as we transition to our new school site in the Fall. We will build on the current foundation and add the following stems: equity and accessibility, transition to post secondary and STEM education. My door is always open, so please stop by if you have any ideas or just want to say hello. Go Gargoyles!

To most, May 4th is just like any other day; to others, however, it is a very special day, for it is Star Wars Day. This wonderful day was chosen out of the hundreds of days in a year, as it sounds like you are referencing the widely loved franchise; stating “may the force [be with you]”; a major line and aspect of the story. The first of many films in the Star Wars franchise, Episode IV – A New Hope, came out in 1977. The space opera saw major success after the release of the first film, and its sequels came out in 1980 and 1983, completing the original trilogy. Over a decade and a half later, the well anticipated prequel trilogy came out, from 1999 to 2005. These films stirred up a media revolution, consisting of new styles and to-be popularized media, along with the usage of video effects and intense, well made musical scores. The gripping storyline also played a large part in the major success of the films; people loved watching the space adventures of the crew on the Millennium Falcon. As the love of the multi-media franchise boomed, so did Star Wars Day. Throughout the films, the phrase, “may the Force be with you”, is said typically before a character goes into a large battle or faces a difficult situation. As such, it is now said on this day as, ‘may the fourth be with you.’ Get it? Well even if you don’t, you should go watch some of the world's most beloved space battle themed films! And we’re not talking about Star Trek.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday which occurs annually on the last Monday of May. Historically known as Decoration Day, it was established to honor the casualties of the Civil War. After World War I, and for every subsequent war, the government would turn the holiday to honoring all soldiers who died at war. It would become a national holiday in 1971 and is now commemorated annually at Arlington National Cemetery. An American flag is laid on each grave and usually the president lays a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It’s a public holiday, meaning that all non-essential government buildings are closed, which includes schools. It’s traditional to raise the American flag to half mast, from dawn to noon, and most people find this time to visit family and friends.

Once again, the time of the Taurus has come back around. If you were born between April 21st and May 21st, you are represented by the bull. This sign’s celestial planet is Venus, and its constellation is located in the Northern Hemisphere. Tauruses are said to be stubborn, dependable, and patient, these are many desirable aspects. Taurus is an Earth sign, along with Virgo and Capricorn. Since its ruling planet is Venus, Taurus is seen as a fixed sign, one that takes things in, rather than being needlessly outgoing, focusing on refinement and aesthetics. Though these traits are broad, they may not be things that you relate to, and that’s alright, as that is the wonder behind zodiac signs. ♉.
