World War II started on September 1st, 1939, when Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. Though the war started in ‘39, the United States did not take part in the fighting until late 1941, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, a lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was an attempt to destroy the American fleets, which when put into action, would be a strong opponent to different Japanese Military movements. Though there is speculation around the US having predisposed knowledge of the bombing, as there was the removal of many military vessels and ships soon before, people did die, and it was the main cause and motivation behind the American citizens wanting to join the war.
This event, along with propaganda and the media’s portrayal around the Japanese military solidified the negative viewpoint that Americans had for the Japanese, which led to hate speech, violence, altercations, and the internment camps that the Japanese-American people fell victim to. The incident at Pearl Harbor led to the United States’ direct involvement in the World War, and is said to have been the start of the end of the second war to end all wars. Now, the United States and Japan are close allies, with a strong political and military treaty.

J. R. R. Tolkien, the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is celebrated on January 3rd. Not to be confused with March 25th, the day to laud and promote his writings, January 3rd is the day to celebrate the author himself. The date of January 3rd was chosen, as it is Tolkien's birthday and, as per his writings, a birthday should be celebrated with a toast, as Frodo does for his Uncle Bilbo every year. This January 3rd, you can celebrate by watching one of the many film or show adaptations, reading one of his works, or by simply setting aside time in your day for second breakfast!

Lunar New Year occurs on the 29th of January this year. The upcoming year will be of the snake or serpent. They are believed to be intelligent, wise, charismatic and mysterious. This is always a very social occasion, where you and your family would prepare a New Year’s Eve dinner. Traditionally, it would be with your entire extended family and friends, all coming together to celebrate the occasion. The entire house would be cleaned and decorated with lanterns, inverted fu ( a diamond shaped piece of paper with the fu [福] character written on it]) paper door banners, certain types of plants, etc. and would all be the color red. The color red is especially important to this holiday as it symbolizes good luck and drives away bad luck. The folklore behind this holiday also comes into play on why the color red is important. It is said that long, long ago, many Chinese villages were terrorized by a beast called “Nian”. It would come every year, on the day before the new year and eat the people and livestock. But one day, an old man (depending on which version you read, it may have been an old woman) appeared and claimed to know how to score the beast off. All the villagers thought he was crazy and on the last day of the year, as usual, all the villagers fled and hid. And as Nian came barreling into the village, every home in the village had red paper posted on it. Loud firecrackers were then thrown towards the monster, terrified, Nian would flee into the forest. This legend would be passed on as the reason for the yearly celebration, of which we know as Chinese New Year.
