March 2025
The month of March is National Women’s History Month! Not to be confused with International Women’s Day, this month began as a local celebration in California circa 1978 called Women’s History Week. It was set in March to coincide with International Women’s Day (March 8). In 1980, just two years after the first Women’s History Week celebration, the week was successfully lobbied to be recognized nationally and was given its first presidential proclamation by President Jimmy Carter in February that year. This year, the month's theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Education & Inspiring Generations.” National Women’s History Month represents and recognizes the suffering women went through for the sake of equality in the US, and is especially important in our state of New York, where women’s suffrage first took roots as the Seneca Falls convention. To acknowledge this month every year, we understand the significance of women’s accomplishments. Also, keep your eyes peeled for certain events happening this month, for instance, all New York Public Libraries are hosting events for National Women’s History Month, as well as certain museums, and NYC Parks.

The missionary who brought Christianity to Ireland, Saint Patrick, is celebrated every March 17th in the United States. As with most Saints, Saint Patrick did not have an easy early life; he was kidnapped at the young age of 16, and sold into slavery in Ireland for around 6 years, until he ran away from his enslaver and fled back to Britain, where he was born. His many writings and spreading of the words of Christianity have led him to be one of the most well known saints, along with being the patron saint of Ireland. Nowadays, to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day, people go out to Irish pubs, wear green, watch some well known Irish films, and party with friends, family, and people in the street!

Although the date is never the same, Daylight Saving Time is always on the second Sunday of March, and this year it’s on the 9th. Since it is the spring, we will be heading forward an hour. Despite the fact that you have to wake up what seems like an hour earlier than usual, this day does more than just mess up your sleep schedule, we have it to maximize our daylight hours. You may notice that the sun is high in the sky longer than the week before, and no, this is not just because the days are getting longer, but also because of Daylight Saving Time which the United States implemented during the first World War. This was done to reduce energy costs, as all available funds needed to go overseas, where we were fighting for the sake of democracy. Make sure to set your clocks back an hour to not trip up your brain!

Astronomical spring starts on the Spring Equinox; Thursday the 20th, this year. The change in seasons means it’s time to soak up some sun, from flowers and trees, to animals and the rain! Although it may not be beach weather yet, spring means that another winter has passed, and the planting season has started! Though the daylight hours have been increasing since the Winter Solstice, now that spring is on the horizon, this will become even more apparent, as the weather will be getting warm enough for people to start going out and enjoying many outdoor activities. To celebrate the start of spring, you can start a small garden by planting easy seeds, such as basil and sweet peas, which can be wonderful additions to your meals. You may also be the lucky folk who sees the first Robin of the season!

Subway Surfing has been a trend occurring in many countries; Austria, Germany, Brazil, United Kingdom, etc. However, when searching up “Subway Surfing”, a lot of recent sources show New York City. We have this problem plaguing our subway system and it's becoming a very alarming trend across social media platforms. Kids think it’s “cool”, but there are many dangerous, possibly fatal outcomes when it comes to this however. First off, some kids are oblivious to which train route they are surfing and don’t take precautions as to how many overpasses you can hit. Many kids have hit low bridges or low structures and died. Some hit the roof of the underground. It’s very tragic and very stupid to begin with. Not only have people been surfing on top of the trains, but they have also been seen at the ends of trains, holding on. Usually in places underground.
Subway Surfing started its peak this year and many incidents are arising to stupid actions. MTA and others tell everyone not to do it, but kids still do it.
Many dark incidents happened during this peak period of Subway Surfing that I would recall. In 2022, a railfanner was blackmailed into surfing on top of the (J) Train by some kids. The railfanner would die from this as a result. In October of 2024, one girl died and another critically injured after falling off a (7) in Queens. In September of that same year, an 11 year old fell off of an (F) or (G) in Brooklyn. Can you believe having kids as young as 11 subway surfing?
How do these kids even get up on the roof? Well, they go through the middle of the car. Allowing them to lift up onto the roof of the train. This is why the New Technology Trains have more surfers than old trains, as older trains have the doors going through the cars locked.
We need to limit this trend, if not stop it completely, to avoid more preventable deaths in the system and help reduce major delays on lines when incidents like this happen. If you witness someone subway surfing, report it to the MTA by calling 511. After all, See Something, Say Something.

Pisces is the astrological sign which governs the majority of March. This sign is represented by two fish swimming in opposite directions; it is a water sign. Pisces are said to be empathetic, artistic and imaginative. They are very in-tune with people's emotions and are very gentle people. However, this can come with some inconveniences, with people who are Pisces being easily overwhelmed and having mood swings. The planet of Neptune rules over this zodiac sign.
