April 2023
How did you feel once you found out you were elected as secretary?
I was very happy. Honestly I think I and the others performed well and we all should be proud of our campaigns.
Have you gotten any requests so far about after school activities? If you have, how are you planning to achieve it? If not, how are you planning to reach out to the students about requests?
I have gotten a request from Mohammed Adeeb about a badminton team and I feel it should be a topic that should be talked about.
How are you planning to reach out and let students know about newly created activities?
We could let students know about newly created activities and ideas during morning announcements. Another way of informing the students is through the school newspaper.
How did you feel once you found out you were elected as vice president?
I felt happy! I felt like it was a great opportunity to represent the school and I knew that there were more challenges that I had to go through.
Do you have any ideas of what activities you would like to implement in the school?
Some ideas I would like to advocate and implement in the school are; definitely more clubs, and outdoor lunch. I would also like to advocate for more sports clubs because I feel like most guys/girls would definitely enjoy them. We can’t make them into a team yet but they could start off as a club and slowly build our way into a team. These new sport clubs could encourage people to get better grades since they would have to have good grades to stay in those sports.
How would you raise money to get the proper equipment for these new sports clubs?
We would make a fundraiser or GoFundMe and we would slowly get the money for the equipment and stuff. We would also look at the safety hazard and stuff.
If the students have any ideas, how would you help implement them?
Now that we are doing advisory representatives they can inform me and we can work towards that. But first, we will work on what we need as a school.
In your interview you stated, "I will always be your #1 reliable person to talk to whether academically or personally", how do you intend to accomplish this?
The students could come up to me to talk about issues that they're having either academically (school related things) or even personal things. When there's more people coming up to me asking me for help others know that they can trust me.
How did you feel once you found out you were elected as President?
I was really surprised and not at the same time. I had doubts and I thought Fabian was going to win at first, and then when I saw my campaign come together, I felt a lot better. I was excited to get to work on helping the school.
How do you plan to reach out to the students about new ideas for the school?
The Advisory representatives are going to come to us. I also had a friend come to me to talk about making a badminton club. So we wrote it down to relay to Ms. Gill about it.
How do you plan to implement the idea of outdoor lunches in action?
Viktor and I had a plan for this. We wanted to talk to Ms. Gill as to why and how we are going to do this because of safety issues and other rules. We would mention things like making sure no one gets hurt because the school is responsible for the students. So I'm planning on trying to implement rules that will make sure no one gets hurt during outdoor recess.
Do you have any ideas of what activities you would like to implement in the school?
Definitely more sports clubs because i know that for sports they have to start as a club first and then they become an actual team. I want to implement more sports because it encourages people to improve their grades to stay in the club.
In your interview you stated, "I want to get new vending machines with better options". Do you have any idea of what you would like to add or take out of the vending machines?
For taking out i feel like it would be best to take out the Scoop Tortilla chips because they give us those for free in the school and you could just ask one of the lunch ladies and they might give you one. We will probably add Lays or Doritos, but we are still asking people about any chips of food they might like. We were also thinking about adding drinks as well.

National Arab American Heritage Month was given federal recognition on April 19th, of 2021, only 2 years ago. The month shines light on many different people who have roots tied to both the US and different Arab countries. Many Arab people have played a big role in the way the United States as a whole and how different small communities within the country function.
One group that has been playing a role in the promotion of the month is the Arab American Foundation. This non-profit was founded in 2019 with the goal of being an educational and cultural organization. Their goal is to contribute to the education of American citizens “about the Arab Identity”, the “Arab Heritage, and to “empower and connect Arab Americans with each other and with diverse organizations across the U.S.” The AAF recognizes and promotes the achievements of different Arab Americans during the celebration of this month. They spread this message and information through different celebrations, resolutions in school districts, state governments, etc.
Someone whose achievements would be promoted by the AAF is James Abourezk. Born in 1931, Abourezk was elected to be a Senator from South Dakota from 1973 to 1979. During his time in office, he legislated many different bills that help the people in different ways. A couple bills he passed were the Grand Jury Reform Act, which helps the accused during a grand jury proceeding, and the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation Recognition Act, that recognizes the lands in South Dakota for Indigenous people as a Federal reserve. These are just two of the many bills that Abourezk supported in his life. While we celebrate Abourezk’s contributions given his recent passing in February of 2023, he is just one of the many Arab-American people who have helped the US and is celebrated during this month.

The holiday of Easter and the month of Ramadan both occurred during April this year. But what’s so special about them?
Easter, occurring during the first Sunday after the first full moon of the spring equinox otherwise known as the Paschal full moon, celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Ramadan, on the other hand, happens the ninth month on the Islamic calendar; a month-long celebration of when the Quran was sent to the Earth to tell the people the right and wrong ways of living.
Easter is celebrated by most Christian countries and is usually celebrated with exclusive church services, music and a few countries have an Easter procession. People also have an Easter egg hunt and the hunt symbolizes when women opened the tomb and it was empty.
Ramadan, on the other hand, is celebrated much more differently. It is a holy month and people practice by fasting, in which they do not eat or drink, until sunset, praying and doing charity work. Ramadan lets you purify your soul, get closer to God, to help the less fortunate and to strengthen your ties with your community and family.
Both of these events happen every year and are very special to religious people and are considered the most holy of holidays. As we have many students who celebrate at least one of these religious holidays, it is important to learn about and celebrate the beliefs that make us unique.

Earth Day takes place on April 22, 2023. Each year, people celebrate to show support for environmental protection and raise awareness to protect Earth’s resources for future generations. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, wanted to create awareness through national demonstrations. By 1990, Earth Day was celebrated by more than 140 countries around the world.
Even though Earth Day happens once every year, we can still save the planet at any time of the year.
Here are some things you can do:
Plant a tree - Trees can absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. It also provides shade during summertime.
Clean up plastic - Many places are polluted with trash. By cleaning up plastic, there will be less trash making its way into the oceans.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - This saves landfill space by keeping useful materials.

The new turnstiles have come to two train stations. These turnstiles were first unveiled in 2021 having a small demonstration at Jay Street. This was removed and these new turnstiles were added at the following select stations: the Sutphin Blvd-Archer Avenue (E)(J)(Z) Station and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center (2)(3)(4)(5)(B)(D)(N)(Q)(R).
These turnstiles allow strollers, suitcases and wheelchairs to pass through. This would allow people that have disabilities or heavy items to go into the subway in ease and not struggle through our regular turnstiles or emergency exits. Go check them out at the select stations!

Poems - Eclipse Carbon
There are many ways to express yourself,
A song, a dance, a story to tell
Your mind limits you to nothing,
Your story takes it’s toll.
Some words just don’t express
The emotion that will reside
The depths of a poem
Can unleash the power of words that is inside.
Titanium Walls: Episode 6 - Anonymous
There is a building in your soul
One that sinks down a hole
A small hut that brings shelter as lies
A single door welded from the inside.
A window is pried open, by familiar hands
Hands of the loving and hands of true
Hands of the people that reach out to you
Hands of the people that are rejected by you.
You tell yourself that it’s fine,
That your not doing this for you
That your doing this to protect those
Those that you hold dear to you.
The poisonous kiss of the broken is a hard manner to deal with
When the heart can’t support itself,
And relies on the help of someone else
But it can’t receive what it can’t see
When the gates are closed off from that in need.
Through a partnership with Ms. Gordon and Mr. Yee's Capstone classes, we searched various charities that are in need. This year, their classes have decided to partner with the non-profit organization "Doctors Without Borders", which helps people around the world gain access to medical treatments that may be essential for life.
We are asking for students to donate three dollars each so that we can accomplish our goal of 800 dollars raised and donated. Click on the community event link (linked to the left) to donate.
Please see Ms. Gordon or Mr. Yee for further information.
