Self contained kindergarten through first grade classes learned about the three primary colors from which all colors are made in an Ice Cream Sundae collage (above left). They also learned that patterns are images that repeat in a directed drawing Owl (above right). Students incorporated basic shapes to develop the image of an owl. They were encouraged to invent their own patterns for the owl's belly, and to color imaginatively.
As the weather turned cooler outside, our attention focused on cold-inspired imagery in anticipation for the PS 008 winter show coming next month......
Alphabet Soup
In this jam-packed lesson, Kindergarten students learned to identify and write letters of the alphabet, suggest three-dimension by adding shadows to their plates and napkins, and explore a variety of media. They used graphite pencils, water-based markers, which they added water to and created a painted plaid background, crayons, and colored papers.
Arctic Village
Second graders explored the color wheel and learned to produce secondary colors by mixing primary colors. With this knowledge they studied an Arctic Village then created an illustration of one, adorned with colorful houses painted in primary and secondary colors. They also experienced working with chalk to create a heavy snow look. Other second graders produced their villages entirely with tempera paints. They double-loaded their brushes to add dimension and realism to their paintings.
5th Grade Sweater Animals
In this whimsical lesson students combined drawing, painting, pattern-making and imagination. Our Fifth graders learned to draw a favorite animal and design an appropriate winter sweater full of patterns for it. Students had to think like fashion designers to create their imagery on which they applied colorful Sharpie markers and colored pencils. Students also learned to double-load paint onto their brushes to paint a realistic-looking snowy day background.
