Popsicle
In this lesson, students learned to work with tempera paint sticks to create a popsicle. They added a background of patterns and lines in white chalk to suggest the coolness of the treat. Foam sprinkles were added for a pop of color and joy!
Color Theory Bugs
Kindergarten students learned some basic color theory! They learned the primary colors are red, yellow and blue and can sing a song about it! To help students remember this, they created ladybugs in the primary colors.
Some classes also mixed the primary colors to create the secondary colors green, orange and purple. To help students know which colors to mix, some students created caterpillars visually showing which two primary colors mixed together create the secondary colors orange, green and purple.
Surf's Up
Highlighting South Pacific Month, second graders learned surfing was invented in Polynesia, and that it was more than an international sport as it is today – it was a cultural and spiritual tradition! Students created a culmination collage featuring surfboard designs using lines, patterns and shapes drawn with colored pencils or crayons. Students also learned about the concept of space and how to suggest distance in painting an ocean with tempera paint sticks. They also represent a flock of seagulls flying above the water, suggesting space by including a variety of different sized birds.
More 5th grade tempera-painted landscapes, began last month, were completed this month. Students drew and painted landscapes of their choice. The images had to show three distinct areas - a foreground, mid-ground and background. Students were also challenged to demonstrate that they understood how to create tints and shades by adding white or black to color hues in these paintings.
