There was so much activity in December. I hope you had a wonderful holiday and joined us for family night where we celebrated a variety of visual artworks created by your children at our Winter Arts Festival. Highlights from the kindergarten included students' "Sleeping Patterned Bears" mixed media artworks. They featured foam patterns uniquely created by each student on a "blanket" for a hibernating bear. See example seen at the show above.
Also featured were "Triangle Forests" created by our SC kindergarten who were learning basic geometric shapes. A close-up of one forest decorated in a snowstorm can be seen below.
Second graders created Mexican Poinsettia collages after learning about how big these plants can grow. Students were amazed to discover how the colors of some plants have been changed via science to produce many different variations for today's market, especially at this time of year. Your children mixed pink, red and green leaf shapes along with yellow dotted centers to produce a variety of festive compositions. A close-up can be seen above.
SC second graders learned to tear paper to produce glowing candles representing the past, present and future. These were also shown at Family Night. See a close-up of a lovely example below.
Some fifth graders learned about the Victorian houses in the neighborhood and the career of an architect. Students also studied the history of gingerbread making. Duly inspired, students designed their own gingerbread houses in the Victorian style - to include multiple floors, trimmings, gables, and more and of course, candy! See above.
The fifth grade also learned to design trucks using an oil pastel symmetry technique. In this way, they produced trucks that were the same across a vertical center line. The trucks were painted to show either the holiday spirit or they were outfitted as snow plows ready for a wintry storm. See a Christmas example below.
