Most of our kindergarten students are busy completing a self-portrait collage. They are selecting a variety of colored papers to work with to produce their skin, facial features, hair, and shirt. They are learning to apply different techniques to produce these portraits including twisting, folding, curling, layering, cutting, and pasting paper. The results are fabulous and give hints about the students' personalities. A small selection of portraits representing the grade will be collaged onto a collaborative paper bus, also produced by the children, and entered into the upcoming Bronx Arts Festival competition. We are crossing our fingers that this wonderful work of art will be accepted. More details to come.
Pine Tree Limbs
Still enjoying the winter, SC Kindergarten students produced a pine tree limb, lightly covered in snow. First they painted a brown branch and then they used a small piece of cardboard, cut in the shape of a rectangle to stamp the spiky pine tree leaves. Lastly, students delighted in stamping white dots to represent snow with the back of a paintbrush (see below), while enjoying a film recording of a snowing pine tree forest on the SmartBoard in the classroom.
Lunar New Year Dragon Eggs
SC Kindergarten students also created imaginary dragon eggs in celebration of the Asian Year of the Dragon. These sculpted creations were made using a foil armature, Model Magic, decorative gems and liquid watercolors in students' favorite colors to suggest the color of their imaginary baby dragons.
Standing Imaginary Birds
Second graders put the final touches on imaginary birds they created that actually stand up on their own using a slot cardboard pedestal. This project was an introduction to 3D design and included feathers students produced with a variety of colored papers, and bodies made of paper decorated with water-soluble oil pastels. Students will be sculpting with paper clay next. Look for the exciting details to be featured next month.
