Adobe Photoshop filters provide a range of options for changing your image’s appearance. You can use filters to clean up or retouch your images, apply special art effects that give your image the appearance of a sketch or pastel painting, and apply distortions and lighting effect.
Filters are mathematical calculations that are applied to an image or a layer. Photoshop filters are grouped into 14 sub-menus.
Using filters from the Filter Gallery is basically a one-stop place for working with special artist filters in your photos. In the Filter Gallery, you can browse through many different types of filters, apply them individually to your image, or even stack them on top of one another like you would with layers. You can get to the Filter Gallery by going to Filter > Filter Gallery.
In this project you will explore how filters can be used to change, distort, or manipulate an image. Apply 3 different Filters to a single image and then save it to to your Google Drive folder.
Then try 3 different Filters on a different image and save that one as well.
Follow the Step by Step directions below to begin...
Step 1
Use Google Advanced Image Search, NOT Google Image Search and find 2 images of something you like that are Larger than 2 MP
Save both of these photos to your Google Drive
See the Screenshots below to save your images using Google Advanced Image Search
EXAMPLE HERE IS 3000 X 1875 PIXELS (see bottom corner for photo dimensions in pixels)
Step 2
Open Adobe Photoshop from the Windows Start icon > All Apps
Step 3
Go to the File Menu at the top left select Open. Navigate to your saved image
from your Google Drive and click Open.
Step 4
Go under the Filter Menu > select Filter Gallery
Click on a Folder (category) and then on one of the Filter icons (photo icon shows the effect) to select a Filter
Step 5
You can preview the change of applying the Filter in the Preview Window. In this example the Ink Outlines filter is applied
Adjust the sliders to change the filter effect and appearance, and click OK when satisfied.
Step 6
Try a (second) different filter on this image. See what happens. If you like the effect, click OK. If not, try something else.
Photoshop also allows you to Fade the Filters strength. This will give you entirely different looks to the filters. To reduce the effect of the Filter right after its applied do the following:
Edit > Fade
Lower the Opacity and try one of the Modes from the list.
Step 7
Try another Filter (3rd one) on this image. See what happens. If you like the effect, click OK. If not, try something else.
Step 8
When this image is finished with the multiple filters applied, go to the File Menu > Save a Copy and Save this to Your Google Drive folder as Filters 1 for the File name and JPEG for the Save as type
Step 9
Open a your 2nd Saved photograph from your Google Drive.
Follow the same procedures as you did before to apply Multiple Filters to your selected photo. 3 different Filters MUST be applied to this photo as well.
Save this to Your Google Drive folder as Photoshop Filters 2.jpg when finished.
Step 10
When both are complete, make sure they have been saved as per the directions in the 2nd step and turn in BOTH Filters1.jpg and Filters 2.jpg to this post on Google Classroom.
