Drugs in sport is one of the most frequently assessed topics on Paper 2, with 66 marks being awarded since 2018 in this area. Your transition task is focused on Performance Enhancing Drugs and in particular the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic games, which had a seismic impact on international athletics in the period 2016 - 2022. These games exposed the most sophisticated, state-sponsored doping scandal in sports history, destroying the credibility of global anti-doping systems, and completely reshaping how global sports bodies regulate compliance. The systematic sabotage forced global governing bodies to issue unprecedented punishments. Russia was officially banned from competing as a nation in subsequent Olympic cycles. Clean Russian athletes were forced to compete under strict restrictions as neutral entities (such as "Olympic Athletes from Russia" or the "Russian Olympic Committee") without their flag or national anthem.
Task 1 - Use the attached Quizlet sets below to help you with your research. Set one outlines reasons for drug taking, set two helps to develop your knowledge and understanding of the three categories of PEDs and set three explains the implications of drug taking on athletes and countries:
Task 2 - Complete the attached exam question using the following structure to help you;
Paragraph One - AO1 – Knowledge of social, physiological and psychological reasons athletes may take drugs . Try to list EIGHT or so reasons, with perhaps two for each category. For example, a social reason that athletes may have taken drugs in the lead up to the Sochi Winter Olympics is because it was institutionalised and lots of their teammates were doing it (peer pressure).
Then AO2 apply the social, physiological and psychological reasons athletes may take drugs to specific athletes and sports. For example, Alexander Zubkov, who was Russia's closing ceremony flag bearer may have taken steroids because he wanted more muscle hypertrophy and explosive power which would benefit him in his event of the bobsleigh (particularly at the start). There are FIVE MARKS available for application so try to include FIVE applications.
Finally, AO3, which is Analysis of short and long term implications of drug taking. For example, Zubkov by taking steroids was risking to mood swings and paranoia, which can make training very difficult, coach-athlete’s relationship may be affected by mood swings and could lead to long term depression . Also he was a significant risk of kidney failure, which could affect his long term participation in sport.
