Essential Question - "Why are cells so small?"
This unit of study will introduce the main concepts of cells and cell structures. Students will explore the cell theory and how we use cells as a basis for biological classification. Please use the following course sequence as we progress through this unit. Each Unit is broken down into modules. Each module contains either a link or an attachment that can provide you with all of the materials that are presented in the classroom.
MODULES:
2.1 Notes—Unit 2 - attachment section
2.2 Cell Model - Students will construct a model of an example plant/animal cell. They will identify a number of organelles and their function. attachment section
2.3 Classification by Cells Lab - use this link to access lab results and handout. Classification of living things by cells is an important skill in biology. Students will use this link to access lab results and lab handout and record in their lab book.
2.4 Diffusion Simulation - Students will complete a simulation of the process of Diffusion. Collecting data from the computer simulation, students will identify various factors that affect the rate of diffusion.
2.5 Diffusion ws I & Diffusion ws II - Please download and complete handouts found in the attachment section below
Diffusion & Osmosis VIDEO link
2.6 Elodea Investigation—Students will use this link to access lab handout and view the aquatic plant Elodea. They will experiment with this plant to determine the effects of a change in salinity. They will record observations in their lab book.
2.7 Diffusion & Osmosis Lab— Students will use this link to access resources and handouts and complete the simulation. This simulation uses a model of a cell membrane that is semi-permeable to certain chemicals. Students will hypothesize which chemicals will pass through the membrane. They will record their observations in their lab book.

* Diffusion & Osmosis video link II
2.8 Cell Size and Diffusion Lab — Use this link to access resources and handout. Students will determine why cells are very small using a models of various size cells. Students will explain how the relationship between surface area and volume relate to cell size and the limitation of diffusion. The items below may be helpful as students complete this investigation.
