What specific aspects of this era of history does the Spies & Space History elective cover?
Spies & Space blasts into 20th Century history, focusing on the leading causes and the global effects of the political, ideological and technological competition between Communist U.S.S.R. (East) and Capitalist U.S.A. (West), in their battle for global domination in politics, ideology, war, economics and technology.
Throughout this unit, students will evaluate the significant events, developments and ideas of the post-1945 era that shaped the modern world. They will use historical sources to identify and analyse the perspectives of individuals and groups in the modern world and use these perspectives to understand the beliefs, values and attitudes of the individuals and societies studied.
Students will also analyse varied patterns and forms of continuity and change, and analyse short- and long-term causes and intended and unintended consequences of significant Cold War events, individuals, ideas and developments that contributed to and resulted from them globally post-1945, along with their influences on Australia.

The Red Scare
Korean & Vietnam Wars
...including pivotal events and key figures such as:
The Potsdam Conference & Berlin Crisis
NATO / Warsaw Pact
The difference in ideologies and tensions between Stalin & Truman
Nuclear technology - bombs and weapons testing
Space exploration / Eisenhower's creation of NASA
Spies and the intelligence agencies (CIA, MI5, KGB etc)
Sputnik & Apollo 11 Mission
Pop Culture & Consumerism
Expansion of the Soviet Union
Support of Proxy Wars - The Korean War & Vietnam War
Chernobyl
The Red Scare & McCarthyism
History of tensions between Russia and the US.
Effects on Australia and the Western world.
Spies & Space offers a unique perspective into the Cold War era - the period in history following the end of WWII and Nazi Germany.
This unit is an excellent choice as a pathway leading into the VCE subject of 'Modern History' which encompasses the Cold War era in part of its study.
