This Trimester, we were required to research and deliver four unique briefs creating our own personal 16 page A3 FolioZine to present our work. The four briefs are; Personal Graphics, Record Album Cover, Retro Button Badge & Book Cover Design.
About me
Hello!, my name is Craig Visser. I'm a student at SAE currently studying design and I've been interested in this industry throughout my whole life. Starting creative personal designs for clients around 3-4 years ago and recently starting up my own business on social media! I always have fun creating and coming up with new and unique ideas. One thing I love about the creative industry is the ability to create whatever you want without restriction and use your own imagination, the possibilities are endless.
Personal Graphics
We where required to develop personal brand graphics which had an element of hand drawn designs, that represented ourselves which can be applied to our FolioZine. My inspiration for this project was "James Victore" a famous designer who is known for this unique handmade typography. Having him as my inspiration helped me reached my objective of thinking outside the box and creating unique, sketchy design which represents my style.
Process
Some of my design choices for this project to represent me where; Using my favourite colour, dull blue which has remained my favourite colour my entire life. I also decided to use a photo of myself since I enjoy photography, a hobby of mine which lends itself to my creative process. Finally, the use of freehand, graffiti style writing and the quote that I have chosen strongly represents me and my approach to design, the ability to create without restrictions or a 'correct' approach is why I love what I do.
Record Album Cover
This Record Album Cover project required us to collaborate with another SAE student from the audio discipline and create an album cover based off their own brief. Working with another student was a great opportunity to practise working for different clients, who may have a different vision than my own. Yet still adding a personal touch to ensure the work is true to who I am as a creative artist, whilst fulfilling the brief given to me by the client.
Process
My process was to ensure I communicated with my client throughout the designing process and got as much feedback as possible. Communicating his ideas with me was a challenge for the both of us, he had a clear vision in mind but found it difficult to express how he wanted me to complete this design. However, with lots of communication and constant feedback we managed to work through these barriers and came out with a product he absolutely loved! The inspiration given to me was Japanese city, neon and retro style. Using those themes as my inspiration helped me reach my end goal representing all the required themes and making my client satisfied with the design.
Feedback
Button Badge Series
We where required to research a Retro Design movement and a key practitioner. Then apply this knowledge we gathered into a retro button badge series for Rottnest Island.
Process
My inspiration for my badge designs was, Saul Bass. He was an American graphic designer, who was most known for his film posters. My objective was to use bright colours and catch the attention of everyone on Rottnest Island, using Saul's style of bright bold colours to make it happen. I incorporated Rottnest's brand colours throughout all the badge designs and the main attractions/ activities which is easily recognisable for tourists & locals.
Book Cover Design
The final design project required us to design a book cover for the classic stories, Red Riding hood or Moby Dick. I chose Red Riding Hood and challenged myself to create a cover that diverts itself from the traditional Red Riding Hood that we all recognise. Trying to take this story deeper and demonstrate some of the darker meanings found in this story, maybe however not for the children's section.
Process
My process for this design started with a lino print of my concept. I then continued to digitise my work and used inspiration from other book cover designs. My book cover was intentionally not created for the faint of heart, trying to remove this tale from the classic children's story that we all grew up with but instead to elevate the deeper meanings and lend itself to a more mature, adolescent audience. Red Riding Hoods more mature themes of vulnerability, trust and the dangers of the world is where I drew my inspiration, keeping in theme with my creative style, this piece is certainly an attempt to stray from the norm. In order to achieve this theme and attract this audience I made a few critical design choices such as, white on Riding Hood rather than the traditional red to represent innocence, vulnerability and purity. Then making the wolf black to represent power, betrayal and evil. With a strong, statement red background to keep in line with the original story and outline the more gruesome end to this tale.
