Rig Demonstration:

Hello 👋, I'm Joel Dunn. During this trimester, my class' main project was to dedicate the time we each had to refine and develop on our own particular skill set. So, we each specialise into particular roles that we would want pursue into becoming our careers. In my case, with experience with 2D animation, my project I decided on was to create 2D character rig.

As it would it give me the technical knowledge and experience with the program, Toon Boom Harmony. As well as teaching myself to adjust and understand to a production workflow of a Technical Artist. Where their role is to work with directors, artists, animators, etc. and figure out what would be the best technical method or the best technology to use for the project and designing and developing the production pipeline for the animators and artists to work with.

In this case, the technical method I went with using is Toon Boom's Node Library. Since, Rigging in Toon Boom is a very technical and involved process that requires a lot dedication and trail and error to get right. A lot of different nodes to link to together to get a 2D character animated and moving effortlessly. Also, Toon Boom is an industry-standard program that gets used across various studios and productions, it would open so many opportunities going forward. There are plenty of popular shows that use this rigged-style of 2D animation like Bojack Horseman (2014-2020), Bluey (2018-), Final Space (2018-2021).

The character I'm rigging is an original character of mine that I designed during a previous trimester. As a brief little character bio, Her name is Zoah, a dimensional traveller/renegade who uses the devices around her forearms to rip open portals to other dimensions and other worlds. I took a bit of inspiration from different sci-fi characters like Doctor Who (1963-1987, 2005-), Rick and Morty (2013-), and Samus Aran from Metroid (1986), too.
