“Working memory has a limited capacity, and when instructional materials overload it, learning is impaired.”
~ Sweller, J. (1988)
Dense notation, crowded spacing, and one-size-fits-all layouts don’t just make music harder to read, they actively compete for students’ attention.
When visual complexity overwhelms working memory, students spend more energy decoding the page than making music.
Modifying notation isn’t about changing the musical goal or lowering expectations; it’s about removing unnecessary obstacles so students can actually engage with the task.
When the page becomes clearer, students persist longer, take more risks, and participate more fully and many of the “behavior issues” we worry about quietly disappear without ever being addressed directly.
“Barriers to learning are often in the design of the environment, not in the learner.”
~ CAST, Universal Design for Learning Guidelines
