Managing the Environment: Using Structure and Supports to build independance and save your sanity

Student behavior in music class is strongly influenced by the environment in which learning takes place. 

Research in cognitive load theory, executive functioning, and self-regulation shows that when environments reduce uncertainty, clarify expectations, and support regulation, engagement increases and disruptive behaviors decrease. 

In ensemble settings, many “behavior problems” are better understood as responses to overwhelming or poorly structured environments rather than lack of motivation or effort. Managing the environment means designing conditions where successful participation is the easiest option.
