Part D: Adapting Notation in Flat.io (Changing the Page, Not the Music)

Once your score is in Flat.io, you can begin adapting the notation to remove visual barriers without changing the musical content.

The goal here is visual clarity and trackability, not simplification of the music itself.

Step 1: Duplicate the Score Before You Start

Always preserve a clean original.

In Flat.io, open your imported score.
Use Duplicate (or make a copy).
Rename it clearly (for example: “Piece Name – Adapted Notation”).

This allows you to:

Create multiple versions
Adjust supports over time
Fade adaptations as students gain confidence

It also is important because although PlayScore2 is excellent - it is not perfect...occasionally it does NOT work, in which case I try first to export the file again as a midi rather than a musicXML, or worst case...type the score in myself

Step 2: Adjust Spacing & Layout First

Start by reducing visual overload.

Common changes:

Fewer measures per line
Increased space between notes
More space between staves
Shorter systems for long passages

Why this matters:

Reduces visual crowding
Makes tracking across the page easier
Lowers eye fatigue

Rule of thumb:
If it feels cramped to you, it’s overwhelming to a beginner

In Flat.io, all layout and score-wide settings live under the score title.

Open the Score Settings

Open your score in Flat.io.
In the upper left corner, click on the title of the piece.
A settings panel will open with multiple tabs for the score.
This is where all global layout, notation, and formatting controls live.

Go to the Layout / Page Settings

In the settings panel, select Layout (or Page layout, depending on your version). This section controls how much music appears on each line and page.

Reduce Visual Crowding

Adjust the following settings intentionally:

Measures per system

Lower the number so fewer measures appear on each line

Typical access-friendly range: 2–4 measures per system. This immediately makes tracking easier.

Staff size

Increase the staff size so notes are physically larger. Especially helpful for beginners and students who lose their place easily

Spacing between staves and systems

Increase spacing between:
Multiple staves
Lines of music (systems)
More white space = less visual stress.

Set Page Size & Orientation

Still in Layout, choose your page size (Letter, Legal, 11×17, etc.).
Select Portrait or Landscape depending on how wide the music is.
Adjust margins if needed:
Larger margins = calmer page
Smaller margins = more room for larger notation

Control Line & Page Breaks Manually (Very Important)

Flat allows you to override automatic layout when needed.

Add a system (line) break

Click directly into the measure where you want a new line to start.
Open the Measure tools.
Select System break.

Click on the measure of music where you want to put a break, and the following symbol will appear. When you print the music, a new line will start after this measure.

Add a page break

Click into the measure where you want a new page to start.
Open the Measure tools.
Select Page break.
Use this to avoid page turns in the middle of phrases or difficult passages.

Remove a break

Click the break marker and delete it
or
Click the measure and toggle the break off from the Measure tools

Why You Do This First - Changing layout before colour or noteheads:

Reduces cognitive load immediately
Makes later adaptations more effective
Helps all students, not just those with identified needs
