Below is a list is mostly created from personal experience, and personal research, as well as trial and error...it can act as a place to start.
Best Fit
Percussion – Built-in movement, clear roles, short bursts of focus
Trombone – Physical movement supports regulation
Alto Saxophone – Forgiving embouchure, quick early success
Baritone / Euphonium – Grounded role, steady pacing
Tuba - The amount of air needed forces self regulation, and the weight of the instrument not only prevents the kid from running around the room, but can help regulation through deep pressure
Bass Clarinet – Large keywork, fewer fast technical passages early on, and a strong ensemble role that feels purposeful rather than spotlighted
If they don't have fine motor concerns, Flute is also an excellent choice - the deep breathing is self regulating.

Bass Clarinet often works better than standard clarinet for students who:
Struggle with fine motor precision
Are easily frustrated by leaks and squeaks
Need strong sensory feedback
Benefit from feeling essential but not exposed
It provides access to the woodwind family without the constant penalty for imperfect finger coverage, which can make the difference between persistence and shutdown.
I purchased stands for my bass clarinets, because a barrier to playing them is set up...students place their instrument on the stand between classes instead of in a case...their mouthpiece and reeds go in the case though..
Bass Clarinet is not a “step down” from clarinet — it is often a smarter starting point. It also is a godsend in the trombone section...place Bass Clarinets between your trombones, they play in a similar register and are more accurate at getting the correct pitch, I teach my trombones to match them.

Selecting the right band instrument is an access decision, not a reward or limitation.
Instruments place very different demands on fine motor control, sensory processing, working memory, and frustration tolerance, and a poor match can create barriers that look like disengagement or behavior.
When the instrument aligns with a student’s strengths and regulation needs, cognitive load decreases, confidence increases, and students are far more likely to persist and succeed in ensemble settings.
