Part C: Import the Music into Flat.io
Once your score is exported as a MusicXML file, you can bring it into Flat.io to begin adapting the notation.
Log in to Flat.io.
Go to My Library.
Choose one of the following import methods:
Drag and drop your .xml or .mxl file directly into the library, or
Click Import a score or tab, then select your MusicXML file.
Wait for Flat to process the file.
The score will now appear in your library as a fully editable document.
In Settings on Playscore, select the song you scanned in.
Click on the setting clog
Make sure the following are toggled on
Play Repeats
Lyrics, text, D.S./D.C.
and under troubleshooting - error correction
Before making adaptations, take a moment to:
Confirm the key and time signature
Scroll through the score for missing or incorrect rhythms
Check that all parts and staves imported correctly
You do not need to fix everything immediately — this is just a quick sanity check.
Before you start modifying noteheads, colours, or layout:
Make a duplicate copy of the score
Rename it (e.g., “Piece Name – Adapted Notation”)
This keeps your original scan intact and makes it easy to create multiple versions later.
Once the music is in Flat, you’re ready to start adapting the notation to remove visual barriers — changing noteheads, spacing, colours, and layout without changing the music itself.
