Sometimes it’s not the kid ~ it’s the system.
If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking “Why won’t they just play?” or “I know they can do this…”, you’re not alone.
Most “behavior” we see in band and music class isn’t defiance or laziness. It’s what happens when students hit barriers they don’t yet have the tools to navigate - reading overload, executive functioning demands, sensory overwhelm, or fear of being wrong in front of peers.
This session is built on one core idea:
When we remove access barriers, we often reduce behavior ~ without adding more rules, consequences, or stress.
What This Session Is (and Isn’t)
This is not a silver bullet.
It’s not a behavior management program.
And it’s definitely not about lowering expectations.
This is a collection of real-world, classroom-tested adaptations that make band more accessible — and more playable — for a wider range of students. Everything shared here is already working in an active band room with real time constraints, real noise, and real kids.
Because this is a one-hour session, we won’t be able to dig deeply into every strategy live. Instead, think of the session as a guided tour, and this site as your toolbox.
