Three Views of a Shoe/ Zoom and Crop

Beach Side

12x18

In the first part of the summative, my job was to take off my shoe that I wore to class and draw three views of it: top, side and front. That day I wore some tall, laced up boots due to the rainy weather that day. The easiest view to draw was the side view, then the front, and then the top view. I really struggled with the top view. I first would sketch all of the drawings with a HB pencil because it was light and wouldn't leave a deep mark. Then, after completing the contour drawing with the best of my abilities, I would mark it over with a darker lead pencil in order to make the lines solid. Unlike the other views that took me and hour, the top view took about and hour and a half to two hours, only because I was struggling with the lines that disappeared on the other side of the shoe. After the first step, I moved on to the next step: the zoom and crop. This meant that I would take a 18x12 piece of paper, create a one inch border, and then create an half and inch border to make three separate boxes. Then, I would take a bufinder and place it onto my three views of a shoe where I saw the most value. I chose the side profile where the laces looped through the boot with the stitching. I would then draw what I saw inside the bufinder onto my the first box on the 18x12 paper. I would use the bufinder again, and lay it on the first zoomed in photo, where, again, I saw the most value and draw that in the second box. Finally, I would take the bufinder to the second boxed image and draw it on the third box to highlight the value. The last and final part of this project was to pick one of these three boxes and turn it into something. I chose the middle box. After turning the direction of the paper a thousand time and with a little inspiration from the teacher, I decided to do a tropical theme. I imagined the tree trunk crossing the page, the wave at the bottom, the shore in the middle, and the coconuts in the sky. That's exactly what I drew. I only used color pencils throughout the piece, just because I didn't feel comfortable with any other material when blending colors. There are many shapes and lines within the shore, waves, palm tree, and coconuts. The brown in the coconuts contrasts with the blue waves, yet ties in with the tan sand. There is a pattern within the tropical theme, and also there is a pattern with the coconuts towards the top of the page.

I am decently happy with this work. I struggled with the theme and what to draw with the lines, but eventually I got the idea. If I had to change it I would try watercolors that way the water had more flow within it.
