Negative Space Drawing

Many Worlds

12x18

This project is the negative space drawing. The task at hand was to look at a few stools stacked up on top of a desk, and draw the shapes around these stools. I drew these shapes with pencil, that way I could erase any lines I wasn't content with. After I had a variety of shapes, I needed to fill these shapes in with a pattern or an image of sorts. So, before i started putting pencil to paper, I sketch out what I wanted to do. The first thing that came to mind was places i've been and enjoyed. So, I went on my camera roll, on my phone, and picked out some of my favorite adventures. The images inside the boxes were made out of a variety of materials, including acrylic paint, color pencil, water color, and marker. Definitely a wide variety of materials, that don't necessarily go together.

During this piece, I was so caught up in bringing in so many different materials and balancing out the color, that it became distracting. With that being said, there is wide range of color—almost every color of the rainbow. There is a sense of balance, that is at least in the work. I tried to make the boxes with watercolors balance and the acrylic blue balance. As for unity, that was my goal, but the final product doesn't catch that. Unintentional emphasis was created with the acrylic blue sky and white clouds.

There is a personal story behind my piece, as explained above, but it's not something most people would catch on due to the sparaticness of the shapes. But, it does relate to my life. For example, the top right corner is where I grew up. The silhouette was when I was traveling with a friend up in the county. Every shape has a meaning. I'm proudest of the acrylic. Acrylic paint is my favorite. But, I made the mistake of not doing it all acrylic. I struggled with what to do with the shapes, pressure of time, and lack of knowledge with materials for my piece.
