College Credit Opportunities

Advanced Placement (AP)

AP is a College Board program that offers students the opportunity to take rigorous, college-level courses and earn college credit while in high school. The content in AP courses is structured like college courses. Students complete an AP course and take an exam at the end of the course. Based on the exam score, students may earn college credit at the college they choose to attend. The score needed and the credit available is set by each college.

In order to take an AP class, students must meet minimum requirements. If you are interested, please talk to Ms. Karnitz for more information.

Concurrent Enrollment

Concurrent enrollment allows qualified high school students to earn college credit in their high school, during their regular school day. Red Rock Central partners with SMSU to offer college credit courses that are taught by qualified RRC teachers and supervised by SMSU faculty. Students who successfully complete these courses earn both high school and college credit at no cost to the student.

Students must meet minimum requirements to enroll in College Now Courses: Juniors must be in the top 1/3 of their class in rank and have a GPA of 3.0+  Seniors must be in the top 1/2 of their class in rank and have a GPA of 3.0+

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The CLEP Program allows students to accelerate their education by earning college credit by taking a computer-

based test of their knowledge. Learning can be done through general academic instruction, independent study, extracurricular work or volunteerism. The time and money saved can be significant. Check with the

postsecondary institution of your choice for their most recent CLEP credit policy. Visit the College Board website for more information.

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)

PSEO is a program that allows 11th and 12th grade students to earn both high school and college credit while still in high school. PSEO courses are offered on the campus of the postsecondary institution and offered online. Each participating college or university sets its own admissions requirements for enrollment into the PSEO courses. Students may take PSEO courses on a full-time or part-time basis. 10th grade students are allowed to take one career/technical course through the PSEO program but these courses do not typically transfer to a 4-year college.

Students must meet minimum class rank and GPA requirements to enroll in PSEO courses. These requirements are set by each college and university but are similar to the guidelines for College Now and AP.
