Communication

Lesson 1 - Searching the web

In our first computing lesson, we looked at how to use search engines. We talked about the different search engines available and we practiced searching for words. From searching for some words online that Miss Parker wanted to know about, we realised sometimes you need more information than just one word - for example rugby is a sport and a place - so you need to be clear what you want to know when you search.

Next, we wrote instructions for how to search online and swapped these with another pair. We realised that searching was different depending on the device you were using.

Lesson 2 - Selecting search results

In our second lesson, we talked about indexing and how all the information is collected for search engines, we had a go at indexing our classroom! Then we had a competition to see who could find the smallest amount of results when we searched for the word cat with another key word. The winner was Rowner Cat and we think this did so well because only local people would search for this, instead of the whole world!

Lesson 3 - How search results are ranked

For this lesson, we had to create our own website for pirates! After we had designed it, Miss Parker shared with us what search engines look for when ranking search results. We then had 5 minutes to add as much as we possibly could to try and make it rank the highest in the class!

We will be continuing this unit soon but Mrs Mullhall set us a challenge which linked to our next unit!
