Computing Systems and Networks

The Internet

Lesson 1 - Connecting Networks

In our first computing lessons, we learned about how different networks are connected. To send information to another computer on the same network, you need a switch. To send the information to another network, the switch has to connect to a router, which connects it to the other network's switch to send it to the right computer. It was tricky to understand first but we acted out the different roles and then it made more sense!

Lesson 2 - What is the internet made of?

In today's computing lesson, we talked about how networks are connected through routers and we also used the Chromebooks to visit three websites - Newsround, Horrible Histories and our school website. We discussed the different content on each website. We also talked about the differences between websites and webpages.

Lesson 3 - Sharing Information

For our third lesson, we learnt about what we can share on the internet. You can share a photograph but you can't share a sandwich! We also completed a quiz to see if we could remember what we had learnt so far in computing and then we came up with our own questions for the class. Have a go at one of the questions here! Lesson 4 - What is a website?

In this lesson, we talked about how we can add content to the web and what we should think about before doing so. We also went on Chrome Music Lab and had some fun making shapes and sounds on the Kandinsky program! You should have a go, too by clicking here! Finally, we used a painting programme somebody made on scratch and then we looked at the code to see if we could spot how any of it works!

Lesson 5 - Who owns the web?

For this lesson, we talked about ownership on the web. For example, YouTubers own the content they put on YouTube - not YouTube! We also learnt that Scratch is open source which means anyone can use the files on the website. We also discussed real life scenarios about money, books and even playground equipment thinking about who owns and is allowed to use these things.
