The Knowledge section is designed (still evolving) as a repository of climate change related information, sorted behind headings. If teachers find useful tools/information that would be of use to the students, please forward those links to Geoff. Wood (see contact details on the HOME PAGE).
The Sharing section is where the students presentations, along with any other presentations, newsletters and reports, are posted. The SYMPOSIUM Videos are also posted there.
The Action section wil continue to grow as different project groups progress to action their knowledge to benefit their school, community, and the Planet. Teachers are asked to take and share lots of photographs, reports that show what the students are doing to make a difference.
Collaborators are shown in this section so projects within regions and information of the schools and community is posted. (new schools are asked to forward a school profile to add to this sectioin)

Briefly, two groups of students are paired. They get to know each other and chose a topic related to climate change. The group decides how to approach the issue and works together to prepare and deliver a presentation that is shared. Groups are encouraged to develop their recommendations into action that will result in change.
Group size four per side.
Students are of middle/high school age (12-18 years).
Group members different ages (younger students learn from older students) -- this really helps!
Willing to commit beyond one year
Meet as a whole group on a regular agree upon schedule (every two weeks or as agreed
Students agree to allow their group to choose their groups inquiry question.
Use ZOOM for intergroup meetings and Google Drive tools to collaborate. (We have found the use of Google Slides is very useful -- think of a filing cabinet -- and information can then be selected and sorted by the group to make their final presentation.
Due to the limited number of students / time difference unavailability, some groups may chose to work on their own iof they can not be paired with students in another school.
• Not use/show discriminatory words or actions that are related to one's race, culture, beliefs, age or gender.
• Not discuss religious or political views
• Be willing to share information related to their school, community and country and ask questions and show interest in their international team members location, school. community, country and culture.
• Be willing to accept that there will be times during the project when progress is slowed, is confusing, frustrating etc., until the group finds their way, i.e. FORM->STORM->NORM->PERFORM
• Correctly label the groups work so it does not get lost. For example: "TOTCUS25 Rosmini-Tacna-social". (having the first word -TOTCUS25 - distinguishes from previous years. The schools and group enables sorting into one folder).
• The group needs to share their working 'slide/file' with a. all members of the group, and b. with: totcus.project@gmail.com or Mr. Wood @ gwood@rosmini.school.nz
HINT: Groups have found using a shared 'slideshow' deck is a great filing cabinet -- using pages to store gathered information (make sure you include the references) -- for example, as a group members finds information they place it onto a slide page (no need to format and make it pretty) . As your information comes together you will be sort this gathered information into a formated presentation.
• Let their partner schools know of their schools schedule for vacations, special days, examinations in advance.
• Allow the students to find their way through trial and error and not take over their project.
• Guide, provide understanding of the collaborative process, suggest resources , etc.
• Always try to ensure the group is online at the agreed upon time.
• Please meet deadlines when requests for project slides, photos, names are requested prior to the Progress Reports in May, the Symposium in November and when general requests for feedback to improve the project are made.
ALWAYS SEEK TO KEEP THIS SIMPLE -- NOT COMPLICATED.
TOTCUS BADGES WILL BE DISTRIBUTED (when available) so teachers may provide recognition of TOTCUS members who have been full participants).
There is a link to a live 2025 schedule further down this page.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Based on past experience 2023 and 2024:. Groups may be formed throughout the year, however, the following is preferred.
February-March form groups and connect.
First 1-3 connections focus on building social connections between the students.
Work to choose an inquiry topic by mid March if possible
Meet as a whole group (Zoom call) every two weeks if possible, allowing time between the calls for the membership to gather information to share when group meets.
See schedule for suggested dates for progress and meet the expert meet ups.
Week of March 24 - 28 (2025) ) TBA -- Western Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere ACTION PROJECT sharing (these are projects that are continuing from 2024 that have evolved to Action level.
Week of April 28-May 2 (2025) On line (ZOOM) all groups meet to share a progress report -- 3-4 slides (5 minutes). This may be split into an east sectional meeting and a west sectional meeting (due to time differences)
November 9 -- all presentations of significance are due for formating and ordering.
November 28 (TO BE CONFIRMED) Presentations of Projects of Significance - In order to reduce the length of the Symposium (2023-3hrs, 2024-4 hours) only projects of significance projects will be presented during the November End of Year Symposium.
"Minor" projects -- those just getting underway or lacking primary data, etc. will be presented in separate TOPIC focused mini-Symposium (more information to follow).
TOTCUS 2024 Symposium Update, November 1, 2024
Greetings:
As we zoom into our deadline date (November 15) for presentations to be submitted, I feel the following instructions suggestions will be useful.
The draft schedule is being distributed to your inbox shortly. Note it is a draft and not the final schedule for presentations.
Please check the names of your students for spelling/additions/removals. If the last name is missing, etc., please let me know as soon as possible.
Check the suggested time for your students on the schedule (and adjust for your local time, please).
Finland, India, Vietnam, and possibly Hongik will deliver their presentations on November 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm NZ time. The Singapore students will be in New Zealand at that time. These presentations will be recorded and the respective parts that your students deliver will be dubbed into the repeat of the same presentation during the December 6 Symposium.
All presentations need to be shared with me no later than November 15 please. The presentations will then be placed in a folder, according to the order of presentation, so we proceed from one presentation to the next – seamless – one group has finished and leaves the stage as the next group walks on // or your group is sitting in waiting on ZOOM live and they are immediately brought into the live room as the previous group exits.
When we receive the finalised presentation, we will insert a ‘transition’ TOTCUS slide (branding, title, names, school). We will do this so it is a consistent format.
We would love to have one picture of all your students, in a group, to add to this page please.
Each group has a total of 6 minutes to deliver their presentation, that means your students and the Rosmini students together have 6 minutes.
If we keep to the 10 minutes per group on stage schedule/window allocated , we will be able to ask some questions for the group presenting.
By agreement, some groups have shorter presentation windows.
Teachers are asked to have their students seated in front of their camera (camera off/microphone off) at least 5 minutes before their scheduled presentation time.
The students need to decide who is covering each section of their presentation.
SLIDES– the Rosmini students have been briefed on the above and the information regarding slides here
Submit the slides as Google Slides –landscape orientation. If your groups are working in a different format, please convert it to Google Slides before submitting.
Slides need to be uncluttered. Suggest max of 15 words –large, with heading bold
Use colourful, relevant pictures /graphs that fill the page.
If there is a lot of information for that page, that is summarised by the max 15 words and illustration above. The rest of the information is in the presenter's script, not on the screen.
The student presenting should not read what is on the screen – but refer to it, for example “In the picture shown, we can see that… “ or “The graph here, see red line, shows that there has been an increase in…” (next page)
All quotations and pictures should be referenced to the source. Suggest use one of the following
Name of authors and date, e.g. (Santino, 2024)
or,
show as (1), (2)
and
Add show the sources as a reference page at the end of the slide show.
NOTE: We will post the entire slide show on the TOTCUS webpage after the Symposium, so it is important that the document, the slide show, references all sources.
Be very careful with colour choices. For example – White font colour on a light blue bale group will not show clearly. Dark backgrounds with dark letters do not show clearly also.
Make the illustrations large – crop out the unnecessary background to ensure what the photo or graph shows is very clear– fill the page. (Again – max of 15 words–large)
PRACTICE: Once the presentations are submitted, practise several times with your group.
Decide who is saying what and in which order.
Practice timing the presentation to make sure you stay within the 6 minute time allowed.
