Welcome to your first exciting year in science at Outwood Academy Ripon, our main aim this year is to introduce you to the life changing world of science.
We will focus heavily on safe practical skills whilst developing key concepts and utilising scientific keywords.
This will be achieved through studying a mixture of Biology, Chemistry and Physics throughout the year. By the end of year 7 you will have:
· Produced and investigated the properties of an electromagnet.
· Used experimental observations to identify solids, liquids and gases.
· Used microscopes and magnification to explore the tiny world of animal and plant cells.
· Investigated how disease affects the body and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
· Developed practical skills by investigating friction and Hooke's law
· Been introduced to Darwin , fossils and the importance of variety in life.
· Possibly become an ecowarrior from studying the importance of recycling and the impact of the carbon cycle.
· Learnt to use the periodic table and create crystals
· Developed green fingers and investigated the power of plants.
· Learnt to describe how your body responds to changes around you.
· Learnt to Identify different energy stores and Chemistry .
· Bought some fizz and pop into the lab and discovered the importance of the pH scale, how to make a pH rainbow and use the power of neutralization to fuel a rocket.
This year our passionate teachers will not only help you develop logical thought and a systematic way of working but will also open your eyes to the amazing world of science around you and light a desire to learn more science.
Throughout Year 7, students study a balanced curriculum comprising equal content for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Lessons contain a mix of theory and practical work, mathematical and scientific skills, individual and group work, projects and three formal assessments.
Students have three science lessons per week, all of which are taught in fully equipped laboratories.
