We welcome children to our academies and we prioritise admission for children with SEND.
We have a comprehensive support programme and our policy is available on the policies page by clicking here.
At Outwood AcademyRipon we ensure that we gather lots of information about our year 6 students before they start at Ripon, we speak to primary schools in person to ensure we have all the relevant information, this information may include:
If your child is on the SEN register or has a Special educational need
If your child is anxious, struggles socially or will need support making friends
Who the child lives with if the family needs or currently has support
If there are any safeguarding concerns and who the key contact is
What your child/children’s academic progress is and if they need support with their learning or catch up support
If your student will need extra transition or support with adjusting to high school
What works for them in primary so we can ensure we provide the best support
If your child has English as an Additional Language
If your child has a medical condition, or disability
This is so we can ensure we put the correct provision and support in place from day 1, it also enables us to set up a transition plan.
Outwood Academy Ripon is a fully inclusive school. Our community includes students with a range of Special Educational Needs and disabilities and we have a fantastic team of staff who make sure that the different needs of all our students are met in the classroom and throughout wider school life. Our team are busy communicating with your Primary Schools about how you learn best and what you need to help you be successful but if there is anything you would like us to know or feel particularly concerned about relating to a Special Educational Need or disability, our SENDCo, Miss Esther Bilby, would be more than happy to hear from you.
In school, we have a special part of the school called The Bridge, run by our Bridge Manager, Miss Beth Mars, and our team of fantastic Teaching Assistants. It’s a separate room in school based around nurture and support. If you need to access the Bridge, you’ll be given a Bridge Pass which tells you when and how often you can go. Sometimes, you might go into the Bridge for an intervention session to help you with something you’re finding tricky. We run interventions on lots of things, including literacy, numeracy, managing anxiety, making friends… The Bridge is a really friendly and supportive place to be when you just need that bit of extra support.
Another way we might support you is through our PLC—Personalised Learning Centre. Again, if you need to access the PLC, you’ll be given a pass which tells you when and how often you can go. In the PLC, you will concentrate on your academic work at times where the classroom environment isn’t working as well for you or when you need a bit of help to catch up with some 1:1 support. The PLC benefits from a key member of staff who runs the provision and also has a suite of computers for independent learning. A decision for you to use The Bridge or PLC would be made by our Inclusion Co-ordinator along with your Learning Manager and our Assistant Principal for Deep Support.
