During your first year of music you will develop the three main musical skills – performing, listening and composing. For performing, you will develop your confidence as a singer.
We will look at how to sing with using the correct technique and you will have opportunities to perform in a group or as a solo performer!
You will also have the opportunity to develop performance skills on keyboards, guitars, ukulele and a range of percussion. For listening, you will develop your understanding of musical elements (the building blocks of music) as well as being able to recognise a range of instrument sounds!
Finally, for composing you will have the chance to write your own music. This will be mainly be through using the computers we have at Outwood Academy Ripon. You will use a range of music software to help create a range of musical styles and even a project to create your own phone ringtone!
The transferable music skills you’ll gain from music lessons will provide you with the background necessary to support your learning in other subjects.

2. Ability to plan ahead
3. Ability to take responsibility
4. Ability to collaborate and work effectively with other to meet goal

6. Ability to manage time well and handle several projects at once
Like many great musicians, their musical journey started at secondary school and we are offering your child that same start. Playing a musical instrument is a rewarding activity that is not only enjoyable, but the skills developed will help with all other school work. It is proven that learning to play a musical instrument at an early age has many benefits to the growing brain and can have a big impact on improving performance in other subjects.
Here at Outwood Academy Ripon we offer your child instrumental lessons and the opportunity to play with other musicians. We can offer lessons on virtually any instrument. The 1-2-1 lesson lasts 20 minutes and takes place during the academy day. Students will come out of their normal lessons to have their instrument lesson.
If your child is interested in peripatetic music lessons please contact Mrs Waddington, our Head of Music.
