PRE AWARD SEQUENCE DIAGRAM
Proposals may generally only be submitted by faculty members. Other individuals may serve as PIs, if allowed by the funding program and approved by OSP. (Institutional Approval Form link)
Is it a federal funder, a foundation, or is the funding actually a gift (see attached gift spreadsheet)
Make sure you have an up-to-date copy from the funder website
Write some stuff here about the different types of solicitation... i.e. white papers, phase 1 submission, invited for phase 2 submission... full submissions...
Project grants are the most common type of research grants. They are awarded to individual researchers or research teams to support a specific research project, and are typically for a set amount of time and funding. The funds can be used for salaries, equipment, supplies, travel, and other expenses related to the project.
The PI is responsible for deciding the direction of the research program on a day-to-basis, within the general scope approved by the sponsor
Federal grant opportunities are announced by program announcements or more focused Requests for Applications (RFAs).
Intellectual property developed during the course of the research is owned by the grantee institution, and may be developed and licensed by it to other entities
A cooperative agreement reflects a relationship between the U.S. Government and a recipient and is used when the government's purpose is to assist the intermediary in providing goods or services to the authorized recipient.
Similar to grants in so far as they are announced via RFAs.
The sponsor’s technical contact is substantially involved in assisting or managing the agreement
Sponsor and awardee responsibilities are spelled out in the notice of award.
The terms of the award determine ownership of purchased equipment, intellectual property rights, and the (usually greater detail and extent) reporting requirements.
Program grants are awarded to institutions or organizations to support a broader research program, center, or initiative. These grants fund multiple research projects that are focused on a common theme or research question. Program grants often require a more comprehensive proposal and may be more competitive than project grants.

Fellowship grants provide funding for individual researchers to support their training or career development. These grants may be designed for specific career stages, such as postdoctoral fellowships or early career researcher awards, and often provide stipends for living expenses, tuition, and research-related expenses. Fellowship grants can be awarded to postdoctoral researchers or graduate students.

Equipment grants provide funding for researchers to purchase equipment necessary for their research project. These grants can be awarded to individual researchers or institutions. Equipment grants are often more competitive than other types of research grants, as they require a detailed justification for the equipment purchase.
Seed Grants are awarded to support the early stages of a research project, often with the goal of securing additional funding in the future.
Industry-sponsored research grants are designed to support research projects that are sponsored by private companies or corporations. These grants typically support research projects that are of mutual interest to the company and the research institution or researcher.
There are many ways to collaborate with industry. Each carries responsibilities that differ from the traditional relationship between academic institutions and foundations, professional associations, or government agencies.
Sponsored Research. Investigator-initiated research projects supported by industry. The Office of Technology Transfer will negotiate a research agreement covering ownership and licensing of intellectual property (IP), publication rights, confidentiality, and ownership of data.
Collaboration Agreement. Projects in which University and company both contribute to the development and performance of the scope of work (CONFIRM)
Subcontract. Company asks PI to perform a specified subproject embedded within a larger project. If the subcontract will be awarded by a company in which the faculty member has ownership or other financial interest (e.g., SBIR or STTR), a conflict-of-interest waiver or management plan must be prepared in collaboration with OSP at the earliest possible opportunity.
Travel grants provide funding for researchers to conduct research in a different location, or attend conferences, workshops, or meetings related to their research field. These grants can cover travel expenses, registration fees, and accommodation costs. Travel grants are usually smaller in amount than other types of research grants
