Year 12 Accelerate English challenges students to engage with texts at a deeper and more critical level. Building on the foundation from Year 11, this course sharpens analytical, interpretive, and communication skills through the study of sophisticated literature, film, and language.
Working at an advanced pace, students will refine their writing, speaking, and viewing skills across a range of complex and varied tasks. This course suits learners who are confident in English and are ready to push themselves toward scholarship-level thinking and expression.
Year 12 English extends students' abilities to think critically, write with insight, and engage with more demanding texts and ideas. Through the study of literature, film, and other media, students will explore how language shapes meaning and influences audiences.
This course supports students in developing greater independence as readers, writers, and speakers. You'll build on prior learning with a mix of creative and analytical tasks designed to strengthen your voice, deepen your understanding, and prepare you for the challenges of Year 13.
English Literacy (12ENL)
This course offers an advanced and in-depth exploration of literacy skills. Students study and practically apply the essentials of the English language, enabling students to engage with texts more critically and independently while still receiving personalised guidance and support.
The Year 12 English Literacy programme places a strong emphasis on Internal Assessment, providing students with focused attention and guidance. Students will refine their communication skills in speaking, writing, and visual expression, catering to diverse purposes and audiences through a variety of text formats.

Our Year 12 ESOL course is designed to support students whose first language is not English, helping them to develop essential language skills for academic success and everyday communication. This course focuses on improving reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities through engaging and interactive activities tailored to individual proficiency levels, to help students with NCEA achievement. Students will explore topics and texts, expanding their vocabulary and understanding of English grammar and structure. Emphasis is placed on practical language use, including classroom participation, project work, and real-life scenarios to build confidence and fluency.

Agribusiness (12AGB)
Agribusiness is the understanding that the ability to produce primary products is not sufficient to make primary producers succeed and that there are many other external factors, which are also important. Students will learn the economic, physical/climatic, political, environmental, technological, historical, social, ethical, and cultural influences on agribusinesses and the interrelationships of science, business, technology, society, and the environment, such as human resources, strategic management, marketing, policy, financial planning, economics, and natural resources.

Biology (12BIO)
In the Biology course, Students dive deep into the fascinating world of living organisms, the intricate systems of cellular processes and inheritance that enable life.
We cover essential biological concepts, including cellular processes, genetic variation and change; incorporating multimedia resources and interactive group discussions to make complex topics accessible and realistic. Practical experiments, examining specialised cellular structures under the microscope and learning about biological drawings, are some of the many essential practical skills that will be developed. We also focus on research and understanding the biological validity of information on current socio scientific issues.
Our goal is to cultivate interest in biology through a balanced approach that integrates theory with practical application leading to future pathways.

Chemistry (12CHE)
Chemistry seeks to understand not only the properties of matter, like the mass or composition of a chemical element but also how and why matter undergoes certain changes.
In this course, students will investigate and measure the chemical and physical properties of a range of groups of substances, including acids and bases, oxidants and reductants, and selected organic and inorganic compounds. Students will also relate properties of matter to structure and bonding and develop an understanding of and use the fundamental concepts of chemistry to interpret observations.
Students also learn to apply knowledge of chemistry to explain aspects of the natural world and how chemistry is used in society to meet needs, resolve issues, and develop new technologies and investigate how chemical knowledge is used in a technological application of chemistry.

Classics is a “multi-disciplinary” subject that develops students’ knowledge and skills across the study of history, literature and art. Students will learn to use, and evaluate, a range of primary and secondary sources, and develop skills in reading, interpretation, critical analysis, research, and written communication.

Commerce (12COM)
Commerce is centred around the use of accounting, economic, and business concepts and models to make sense of society and solve problems. In this subject, ākonga will build the knowledge, skills and values needed to navigate and participate in the economic world. They will learn how participants in the economic world make decisions and they will analyse how these decisions impact sustainability.
Ākonga will learn that decision-making is necessitated by scarcity and that decisions are informed by a variety of cultural perspectives and lenses. Learning and assessment will examine Māori, Pacific and different approaches to Commerce and Business Models in whānau and organisation contexts.

Dance (12DAN)
Explore a variety of dance genres, including Hip Hop, Jazz, Contemporary, Haka fusion, Ballet, and Musical Theatre.
This course will help build your confidence in dance and will look more deeply at the varying elements that make it what it is. These classes will develop your skill and ability to critique dance performances, write choreographic intentions, choreograph dance routines using dance structure, research dance practices, deliver media presentations and perform dance sequences to invited audiences,
with confidence.

Drama (12DRA)
Students will study the craft of performance through a variety of hands-on activities, including character development, voice technique, staging and rehearsals. In this course, there is the opportunity to study a variety of dramatic genres by reading and watching theatre versions of plays, script writing and developing group presentations over some aspect of the theatre and/or entertainment industry. Dramatic performance is required of all students.
In Drama students learn to work individually and collaboratively to construct meanings, produce works, and respond to and value others’ contributions. They learn to use imagination to engage with unexpected outcomes and explore multiple solutions. They will develop increasing control and confidence to communicate effectively.

Employment Skills (12EMP)
The course objective is to provide ākonga with the skills and knowledge to be able to apply for employment opportunities, research suitable study options for Level 4 and beyond, as well as communicate in specific contexts for employment situations.
Ākonga taking this course will have the opportunity to develop skills such as writing correspondence for specific contexts for employment and demonstrating specific ways of communicating assertively.

Fashion Technology (12FAS)
This is where creativity meets craftsmanship. In Year 12 Fashion & Textile Technology, students take full creative control — designing and constructing their own unique garments or textile products through the advanced technological process. Food Technology and Hospitality (12FTH)
If you’re passionate about food, health, and making a real difference through what we eat, this course is for you! Food Technology and Nutrition offers hands-on experience in preparing food products while exploring the nutritional value of everyday meals. You'll dive deeper into how food choices impact individuals, families, and communities, learning about the social issues and health factors that influence what we eat. Geography (12GEO)
Geography is the study of our planet, our home. It explores the natural environment, the patterns and processes that created it, and how people connect to that environment.
Geography also looks at issues that affect the cultural, economic and political spheres of our lives Ākonga learn to think spatially, to use maps, visual images, statistics, and other data, and to use inquiry processes to obtain, present and analyse information. Through geographic thinking they develop understandings related to patterns, processes, relationships, interactions, and change.

This course is designed for students who can think critically about determinants of health and their influence on local and international health issues. Students will show their understanding of the underlying concepts in Health Education - Hauora, determinants of health, attitudes and values, health promotion and social justice. Mathematics with Numeracy Focus (12MAL)
12MAL is a supportive and practical Level 2 Mathematics course designed for students who have not yet achieved the NCEA Level 1 Numeracy requirement. Photography and Graphic Design (12PGD)

This course will develop further understanding of the ‘core’ Physical Education principles with a focus on mostly sport science achievement standards, namely exercise physiology, motor skill learning, anatomy, biomechanics, and sociocultural factors.
Students taking this course will have the opportunity to develop physical skills in a range of practical activities. They will also develop their ability to apply the principles they are learning, reflect on their implementation and analyse their effectiveness.

Physical Activity Outdoors (12PAO)
12PAO is a hands-on course designed for students who enjoy being active and learning in outdoor environments. It offers a unique opportunity to develop physical skills, build confidence, and strengthen interpersonal abilities through practical experiences in local outdoor settings such as waka ama, mountain biking and tramping.
With a strong focus on real-world learning, this course includes both physical challenges and cultural exploration, particularly around the concepts of kaitiakitanga and whanaungatanga. 12PAO is primarily assessed through Unit Standards, offering up to 23 NCEA Level 2 credits, with an additional 4 credits available from Achievement Standards. It is ideal for students who are motivated by experiential learning and are keen to explore the outdoors.
Physics (12PHY)
In their study of physics students will develop the skills to investigate, analyse data and deduce complex trends and relationship in physical phenomena. Physical phenomena including mechanics, electricity, electromagnetism, light and waves, and atomic and nuclear physics.
Students will produce qualitative and quantitative explanations for a variety of unfamiliar situations and they will also use physics ideas to explain a technological or biological application of physics.

Senior Social Studies (12SSS)

Te Ao Haka (12TAH)
Te Ao Haka is a culturally responsive art form, providing opportunities for all students to engage in Māori culture, language and traditional practice. Te Ao Haka is founded on traditional knowledge, but is progressive in the development and evolution of the art form.
At Level 7, students explore their own creativity, based on their grounding in Te Ao Haka. They innovate and experiment, exploring their own role and connections within Te Ao Haka.

Te Reo Māori (12REO)
This course builds on the foundations laid in our NCEA Level One programme and offers a more indepth exploration of both contemporary and traditional issues that are relevant to who they are as young Māori women.
Akonga will develop a deeper understanding of te ao Maori through the study and application of both formal and informal practices associated with language acquisition. They will also continue to strengthen their research skills and creative writing techniques to express their learning.
There is a particular focus on the development of Māori voice which goes beyond the literal translation of their ideas and seeks to create a stronger connection to the wider world, our tupuna and our atua.

Tourism (12TOU)
This course is a foundation course in the study of Tourism. In this programme, students learn about the various sectors and work roles in the tourism industry, the needs of different types of tourists, the business of tourism, and the impacts that tourism has on tourism destinations.
Our students will understand tourism terminology, build on their geographical knowledge and gain knowledge of different tourist destinations around the world and in New Zealand.
Trips to local tourism providers and guest speakers from the tourism industry will provide an insight into the opportunities available in the field.
