At Rotorua Girls’ High School Rautāwhiri the Physical Education and Health curriculum area consists of the following subject areas: Physical Education, Health, Sport Leadership, Junior Sport Leadership, Physical Activity Outdoors, Police Studies, and High Performance Academies.
In Physical Education and Health we focus on the wellbeing of self, others, and society and how this can be enhanced through movement and health-related contexts. In Physical Education, we provide opportunities for students to learn movement skills, and experience movement in different contexts such as individual and team sports, ngā taonga tākaro, fitness, adventure based learning, and outdoor education. In Health, we explore a wide range of health issues that are both relevant to young people, and to Aotearoa society. We provide students with opportunities to learn about, and improve their own wellbeing, and the wellbeing of those around them.
Students in Physical Education and Health develop a wide range of movement, self-management, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking skills through their experiences and understanding of movement and health-related contexts. These skills are not only essential life-skills but are also transferable skills which are valuable across all learning areas.
By undertaking study in Physical Education and Health subjects students' can progress into any career path that requires self-management, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills. Career options include, but are not limited to: personal trainer, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, nurse, counsellor, event manager, sport administrator, teacher, social worker, policy developer, health promotion advisor, research analyst, tourism guide, police officer.
Health
In Health you'll explore the fascinating world of your body and mind. You'll learn about nutrition, mental health, and how to make smart choices that keep you feeling your best. We'll dive into various areas of health and by the end of the course, you'll be equipped with the knowledge to take charge of your well-being and make decisions that positively impact your life.
Physical Education
Physical Education is all about staying active and having fun while learning new skills and exploring the function of the human body. Whether you're running, swimming, adventuring outdoors, or playing team sports, Physical Education helps you build strength, coordination, and confidence. You'll discover the importance of physical activity for wellbeing, and learn how to train your body and mind to improve fitness and sport performance.
Police Studies
Police Studies introduces you to the exciting and challenging world of law enforcement. You'll learn about the role of the police in society, how laws are enforced, and the skills needed to maintain public safety. This course provides insights into criminal justice, community policing, and the ethical responsibilities of being an officer, preparing you for a potential career in public service.
Sports Leader
In the Sports Leader course, you'll develop leadership skills through the world of sports. This course teaches you how to organise events, coach younger athletes, and motivate teams. You'll learn the value of teamwork, communication, and responsibility, gaining the confidence to lead others both on and off the field. Whether you’re interested in coaching or just want to be a better leader, this course will help you make a positive impact.
Students who successfully gain a place in to one of the High Performance Academy; basketball, netball, or rugby. Students will participate in skill-building, fitness, and strategy training; and learn about athlete well-being, sports psychology, physiology, and injury prevention.
