In Art and Technology we cover two distinct curriculum areas. We offer a variety of subjects and opportunities including, Art, Design, Painting, Photography, and Technologies - Digital, Fashion, Design and Visual Communication, and Food. Our faculty allows students to explore their creativity using many different mediums and develops critical thinking and problem solving skills.
By undertaking a study in Art and Technology subjects students' can delve into many differing and creative fields. These can include but are not limited to Designers, Retail, Architects, Chef, Computer Scientist, Photographers, Artists, Web Designers, Publishers, Educators, to name only a few. Art and Technology are the areas where the world of possibilities and opportunities are at your feet.
Design and Photography
The Design and Photography class is driven by creativity and student interests. The goal is to expose students to think with a creative mindset and learn how to problem solve. The skills students learn in the course can be applied to a wide variety of other subjects.
Design and Photography offers a wide variety of achievement standards and can be individualised based on student interest.
Digital Technology
Digital Technology is an exciting and dynamic subject designed to give students hands-on experience with the digital tools and innovations shaping the world around us. The course exposes students to a wide range of real-world applications in the field of technology, encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. Students can explore a variety of achievement standards through engaging programmes that include computer programming, networking, software design, database management, website development, 3D printing, and robotics.
Design and Visual Communication (DVC)
Design and Visual Communication (DVC) is the language of design. It’s about solving real-world problems, thinking creatively, and communicating complex ideas visually and effectively. Rooted in both artistic expression and technical precision, DVC bridges the gap between creativity and functionality—connecting the worlds of architecture, product innovation, spatial design, engineering, and visual storytelling.
DVC encourages students to be critical and creative thinkers with a strong sense of purpose and curiosity. It nurtures an appreciation for aesthetics, functionality, and sustainable design, and empowers young designers to consider not just how things look—but how they work and why they matter.
Fashion Technology
The Fashion and Textiles class combines creativity with practical design, focusing on creating garments and textile outcomes that are both functional and expressive. Students are encouraged to explore their individual style and cultural influences while developing strong technical and design skills. While hands-on making is a key part of the course, theory and design understanding are essential to creating high-quality, wearable outcomes.
Students apply the design process to solve real-world problems and learn skills that transfer across multiple subjects and career pathways. Opportunities include entering competitions, taking part in school-wide events, and leading creative projects at Rotorua Girls High School.
Food Technology
Food Technology is a creative and hands-on subject. The goal is to expose students to a range of different Food Technology experiences that connect to the real world.
Food Technology offers a wide variety of achievement standards. Programmes range from food safety and hygiene, nutrition, sensory testing, food science, recipe development, meal planning, cultural food practices, sustainable food production, and designing and creating food products.
Visual Art
The Art and Painting class is centered around creativity and personal expression. The aim is to encourage students to develop a creative mindset and strengthen their problem-solving skills.
The techniques and concepts learned in this course can be applied across many other subjects and creative pursuits. Students are encouraged to explore opportunities such as local and international competitions, cross-curricular projects, and leading creative endeavours at Rotorua Girls High School.
Art Painting offers a range of achievement standards and can be tailored to suit individual student interests and goals.
