Art Painting (10ART)

Business (10BUS)
Business Studies extends students’ understanding of foundational business concepts and knowledge, which they can apply to both local and national companies. In addition, they will be introduced to Māori Business practices which encompass culture, values and tradition alongside modern techniques and technologies. Students will develop their understanding of business theory and practices in a range of relevant contexts, through experiential as well as theoretical approaches to learning.
Dance (10DAN)
Dance students explore genres such as Hip Hop, Jazz, Contemporary, Haka Fusion, Ballet, and Musical Theatre. They develop skills in literacy, performance, and choreography enabling them to critique dance performances, choreograph routines, research dance practices, deliver media presentations, and perform dance sequences. Dance builds physical strength and confidence and promotes collaboration and critical thinking. This is a recommended stepping stone to NCEA Level 1 Dance.
Design and Animation (10DSA)
Step into the world of character creation and animation! In this course, you’ll sketch original characters, design imaginative worlds, and bring your ideas to life through hand-drawn storyboards and digital animation. Using tools like Adobe Photoshop, you’ll create everything from character sheets to animated GIFs while exploring identity, storytelling, and creative problem-solving. A perfect starting point for future study in Design, Photography, or even game art and animation. This is a half year option.
Digital Technology - Digital Creators and Makers (10DCM)
Digital Creators & Makers is a hands-on Year 10 course where students blend creativity with technology. They’ll explore mobile app and game development, 3D design and printing, and robotics using tools like MIT App Inventor, Inkscape, and Micro:bits.
From designing stickers to coding robotics using Micro: bit, virtual platforms, and printing 3D- products like key tags and Jibbitz croc charms, students build real-world tech and design skills that lead directly into Year 11 Digital Technology NCEA credits.
Digital Technology - Programming and Digital Design (10PDD)
This course is a dynamic, hands-on course where creativity and technology come together. Students will explore Python programming, website design, and 3D modelling—creating everything from interactive web pages and eye-catching digital stickers to custom 3D-printed products like key tags and charms. They’ll also dive into robotics using Micro:bit and virtual platforms. This course builds key skills in coding, problem-solving, and digital design, laying a strong foundation for future tech learning and leading to NCEA Level 1 Digital Technology.
Drama (10DRA)
Drama is suitable for students who wish to develop their performance skills and provides an excellent base for those wishing to continue with Drama at NCEA Level 1. Students will explore improvisation, acting techniques, scripted interpretation, theatre form, and devising. Students will gain experience in public speaking, collaboration, role-creation, movement, improvisation and scripting. The course aims to provide confidence-building opportunities and develop communication skills through performance.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (10ESOL)
Our Year 10 ESOL course is designed to support students whose first language is not English, helping them to develop essential language skills for academic success and everyday communication. This course focuses on improving reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities through engaging and interactive activities tailored to individual proficiency levels. Students will explore topics and texts, expanding their vocabulary and understanding of English grammar and structure. Emphasis is placed on practical language use, including classroom participation, project work, and real-life scenarios to build confidence and fluency.
Fashion Technology - Sustainable Streetware (10SSW)
This course is all about style with a message. Students will dive into the world of upcycled fashion design, transforming thrifted clothing and textiles into bold, wearable art that reflects who they are and what they stand for. From custom patchwork hoodies, reworked denim, and painted jackets, students will learn how to plan and execute one-of-a-kind fashion pieces using eco-conscious design principles. They’ll explore upcycling, sewing skills, design thinking, and technological practice. It’s fashion with edge, purpose, and impact.
Fashion Technology - Textiles Design for Purpose (10TDP)
In this creative, hands-on course, students will design and make practical textile products with personality and purpose. Projects could include custom tote bags, bold cushions, tech pouches, or even textile planters. Students will explore surface design techniques like printing and appliqué, while building skills in sewing, planning, and evaluating their own designs. With a focus on functionality, identity, and sustainability, this course turns everyday textiles into something extraordinary.
Food Techology - Food Innovation (10FDI)
Food Technology students will enjoy cooking and learning about a broad range of nutrition and technology designs in food. The lifelong skills learned in Food Technology ensure students can make healthy informed decisions, and enable them to produce food products. Nutritional benefits of food choices are researched and students are encouraged to prepare food with this knowledge. Presenting, packaging and marketing food is also experienced and students will have the opportunity to showcase their products to their teachers and peers.

High Performance Academy (10HPA)
Students who successfully gain a place in the High Performance Academy; basketball, netball, or rugby, will be placed into this class (overriding previously selected options in Option Line 2). Students will participate in skill-building, fitness, and strategy training; and learn about athlete well-being, sports psychology, exercise physiology, and injury prevention.

Horticulture (10HRT)
In Year 10 Horticulture ākonga will be introduced to the Science of growing and tending to plants. The course provides ākonga with opportunities to investigate the relevance of primary production to people, location, environment and sustainability. During the course, ākonga will develop skills in plant propagation techniques such as sowing seeds, potting on seedlings, planting out and understanding plant management practices related to plant physiology. Ākonga will have opportunities to experience primary production through EOTC outings.
Japanese (10JAP)
Students undertaking this Japanese programme are introduced to both the language and culture. They will learn the Japanese alphabet, numbers, and basic language structures. Additionally, students will explore topics describing emotions, and weather, how to describe locations, and an introduction to common verbs. Throughout this course, students will learn how to read, write, listen, and respond in Japanese at a basic level.
Junior Sports Leader (10JSL)
Junior Sports Leader students study a range of individual and team sports, games, and physical activities at an extended level. The focus of this course is on scaffolding student’s knowledge and understanding of Physical Education principles, which will lead to success in Level 1 PE. Students taking this course will have the opportunity to develop their critical thinking, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and knowledge of sport and exercise science.
Media Studies (10MED)
Year 10 Media Studies builds on the foundational knowledge from Year 9, offering a deeper look into how media texts are constructed, consumed, and interpreted. Students will explore more complex narratives and representations, learning to analyse how social, cultural, and political ideas are communicated through film, television, and digital media.
The course also develops students’ production skills through collaborative projects such as short films or visual campaigns, giving them the chance to take on roles in directing, editing, and scripting. By the endof the year, students will be able to discuss media with confidence, think critically about the messages they encounter, and create purposeful media texts of their own, preparing them for NCEA Media Studies.
Music (10MUS)
Music students are nurtured, and challenged in this course. They will be provided with opportunities to perform as a soloist and as a member of a group. They will create their music individually or collaboratively and investigate different styles of music from Aotearoa and around the world. After this course, students will have grown as a performing artist and composer. This is a recommended stepping stone to NCEA Level 1 Music.
Ngā Toi Māori (10NTM)
This inspiring half-year course invites you to connect deeply with your cultural identity through the rich traditions of Ngā Toi Māori. You’ll engage in creating a visual pepeha, a personal storytelling artwork that shares your connections to your whānau, whenua, and heritage. Alongside this, you will craft a unique taonga using a range of techniques to express your personal and cultural narratives.
Throughout the course, you’ll develop valuable skills in visual storytelling, cultural expression, and creative thinking, all grounded in tikanga and Māori perspectives. This is a meaningful pathway to build confidence and a strong foundation for NCEA Level 1 Art, celebrating identity and creativity.

Te Reo Māori (10REO)
Te Reo Māori students will converse with Te Reo Māori speakers in familiar social situations and experience with some less familiar ones. They will be able to use basic Māori language patterns spontaneously. Students write short passages, personal letters, and simple formal letters in Te Reo Māori. Students will become confident in using strategies for learning Te Reo Māori and communicating with others in predominantly Māori social contexts.
Te Ao Haka (10TAH)
Te Ao Haka is a culturally responsive art form, providing opportunities for all ākonga to engage in Māori culture, language, and traditional practices. In Te Ao haka students will learn tīkanga, knowledge systems, and iwi traditions through wānanga and performance. Through performance, ākonga can explore foundation skills, creativity, expression, and refinement. The performance forms a key part of their learning as they progress on their Te Ao Haka journey.
