Comparing numbers can be done by using the symbols you see to the right... REMEMBER, the smaller number always eats the bigger number:)
"Less than" and "Greater than" are words that can be used without the symbols < = > also.
If you hear, "what number is 6 less than 72" you will have to count backwards from 72 to find out the answer. The same will go for "6 more than 72" as in you'd count forward from 72, 6 times.
The best tool to use when you have to do this until you REALLY get it is a number line...
You can start your forward or backward count from any point on a number line. You can even start with a blank number line and add your own numbers based on the question you're trying to answer.
Counting backwards on a number line is the same as subtracting, while counting forwards on a number line is the same as adding.
