Positive/Negative Design

Students will:

• create an original Positive & Negative Design using space (positive, negative) free flowing shapes (heart, nature, animal) and contrasting colors (black, red; pink, white)

• understand design principles (balance, movement, composition) and paper cutting techniques (counterchange, free flowing shapes, rotation) relating to American Artists Dorr Bothwell & Arthur Wesley Dow

• recognize common themes, subjects, and techniques inspired from Japanese Folk Art

• learn the definition of Notan (Japanese word meaning light & dark space)
