Personalized learning is an instructional approach that empowers students to build ownership of their learning. Educators personalize learning by targeting instruction, fostering collaboration and creativity, facilitating reflection and goal-setting, and designing flexible learning experiences.
Personalizing learning is an active and ongoing process. It is a student-centered approach to learning that calls on educators to be responsive to the needs of their students.
When students get the instruction they need, when they need it, they are more engaged, successful, and better prepared for college and careers.
EduProtocols are modern takes on some of our classic strategies. They are instructional lesson frames that are designed to engage students in learning through critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity and help students master content.
EduProtocols can be used with any subject, any grade level, kindergarten through adult. There have been several books written about EduProtocols with real-world applications. (www.eduprotocols.com)
We have curated a selection of EduProtocols for you to choose from. Our accompanying Wakelet provides detailed instructions on how to incorporate these protocols into your classroom, along with relevant examples and customizable templates.
Take some time to review the Wakelet and select the EduProtocol that aligns best with the learning objective you will be covering in the upcoming week. Read over the information, watch the videos, and make copies of any templates you will want to use. Once you've made your selection, you can move on to creating the corresponding activity on the next page.
📌 Note: It is helpful for your first time implementing an EduProtocol that you keep it simple. You may want to focus on content or a topic that is simple to grasp or something that is not necessarily content-heavy (ex: SEL time, exit ticket, building background knowledge, etc). You want your students to have a successful first EduProtocol experience!
1. If you have not done so already, select one EduProtocol that aligns with the learning objective for the upcoming week. If you need to, go back to the previous page to review the EduProtocol and familiarize yourself with the structure and steps.
2. Using the templates provided, create an activity for your students based on the EduProtocol you have chosen.
3. Incorporate the learning objective and any relevant content into the activity.
4. Consider how the EduProtocol will facilitate student engagement, critical thinking, and collaboration.
5. In the following discussion, you will share a brief description of the activity you created, including the learning objective and the template.
As you move through the presentation, take a look at the best practices and supports you will want to utilize when you implement your EduProtocol for a second time.
Now that you have your activity and posted to get feedback from colleagues, it's time to use it with your students!
As your students work through your activity, collect the artifacts of their work. Remember, you will want to include:
Taking pictures or videos of students working on the activities
Gathering links and screenshots of students' work
You will need to share these artifacts in the next assignment (Classroom Implementation Discussion).
