DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a skilled trade position responsible for performing a variety of plumbing and steamfitting tasks, routine maintenance, and odd jobs. Work may be conducted during nights and weekends. Work is performed in accordance with applicable health and safety standards such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher level staff member, with leeway allowed for planning the details of assignments. Lead supervision may be exercised over the work of a plumber's helper or laborers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
Prepares working details of and performs skilled work involved in altering, maintaining and repairing water and sewer systems, sinks, toilet equipment, and their accessories and fittings;
Performs pipe fitting work with steel, iron, brass, lead and other materials;
Inspects and tests pipelines and plumbing;
Maintains tools, supplies and equipment;
Performs a variety of routine maintenance duties.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the standard practices, processes, materials and accident precautions of the plumbing, steam‑fitting and pipe‑fitting trades; good knowledge of mechanical drawing; good knowledge of the health and safety regulations of the trade including OSHA, working knowledge of applicable plumbing laws and regulations; ability to work from plans, sketches, specifications, blueprints; ability to kneel, bend, twist, crouch and crawl; ability to work outside, and in cramped/awkward locations; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent plumbing experience at the journeyman level.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
When assigned to Monroe County government, you must possess a current Plumbing License issued by the City of Rochester.
When assigned to Monroe County government, Welding, Valve Maintenance and Repair, and Silver Braising and Soldering certifications are required at time of appointment.
If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
