DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work responsible for the installation and repair of concrete, masonry, tile, bricks, plaster, stucco, glass-block and cement on buildings, wall partitions, arches, sewers, stairs, foundations and other structures. Work is performed in accordance with applicable health and safety standards such as OSHA. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, a higher level tradesperson or senior staff person. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
Plans the layout of new masonry work or repairs by consulting plans, blueprints or sketches and estimates material needs;
Installs concrete, masonry, tile, bricks, plaster, stucco, glass block and cement;
Sets concrete forms at desired pitch and depth, installs guide wires, wire mesh, lath, rebar, or other similar materials to hold mortar and finished masonry in place;
Mixes mortar and monitors exterior conditions to determine proper mixes and adjusts conditions for proper curing;
Fastens new work to existing surfaces using clamps, ties, anchors, cements, mortar, or by fusing materials;
Constructs or repairs walls, partitions, arches, sewers, stairs, foundations walkways, or other structures.
Applies plaster or stucco to walls, ceilings, or building partitions using trowels, brushes or spray guns;
Cuts or breaks materials to size with trowel, brick chisel or power saw;
Applies mortars and finishes work with trowels and jointing tools for a uniform appearance;
Prepares surfaces to accept applications of masonry materials;
Applies pre-fabricated insulation to building exterior prior to completing masonry work.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWELDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in masonry and bricklaying; good knowledge of the health and safety regulations as relating to the masonry trade including OSHA: good knowledge of the common types and varieties of masonry materials; good knowledge of basic math; working knowledge of applicable building codes; ability to estimate material and labor costs; ability to read blueprints, drawings and sketches; ability to kneel, bend, twist, crouch and crawl; ability to work outside, at heights, in all weather conditions, in cramped/awkward locations, and from ladders and scaffolding; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma plus EITHER:
(A) Five (5) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience in installing and repairing masonry and concrete; OR,
(B) Two (2) years paid full time or its part time equivalent journey man level work in the masonry trade; OR,
(C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
