DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a skilled trade position responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, control equipment, lighting, emergency power, fire alarm, data and telecommunications, security, access, control, and all other building systems associated with the electrical trade. Work is performed in accordance with applicable health and safety standards such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher-level staff member, with leeway allowed for planning the details of assignments. Lead supervision may be exercised over a subordinate staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
Uses blueprints to Install and maintain lighting in schools and offices;
Services and maintains electric power equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, saws, drill press, grinders, mills, kiln and liquid dispensing counter equipment;
Services clocks, exit lights and emergency lighting fixtures;
Maintains kitchen equipment such as stoves, ovens, refrigerators, steam boilers, cookers, hot boxes and power equipment;
Maintains and repairs circuit breaker switches and fuses supplying electrical power to classrooms or offices and installs new electrical outlets for computer equipment;
Installs, maintains and repairs boiler and fan room equipment including motors, compressors, boilers, pumps and fans;
Installs and services intercom phones and related equipment;
Services outdoor security and other lighting on buildings and on grounds;
Installs and wires components for fire alarm and security systems.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical components of the lighting, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, communication, and security systems used where assigned; good knowledge of the common practices, electrical hardware, terminology and safety precautions of the trade; good knowledge of circuit theory and its applications; good knowledge of the health and safety regulations of the trade including OSHA,.working knowledge of mechanical drawings; ability to kneel, bend, twist, crouch and crawl; ability to work outside, and in cramped/awkward locations; ability to work from various schematics and blueprints of the equipment; ability to work independently; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and follow oral directions; manual dexterity; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus: two (2) years paid full‑time or its part‑time equivalent electrical experience at the journeyman level.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
When assigned to Monroe County government, you must possess a current Master Electrician’s License issued by the City of Rochester.
If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
