DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a skilled journeyman level trade position responsible for performing a variety of painting tasks, including lay out and prep work. Work may be conducted during nights and weekends. Work is performed in accordance with applicable health and safety standards such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA.) The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher level staff member, with leeway allowed for planning the details of each assignment. Lead supervision may be exercised over the work of painter helpers or laborers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
Prepares surfaces by scraping, sanding, washing, calcimining, applying paint and varnish remover, and brushing iron surfaces with wire brush to remove rust and scale;
Paints exteriors and interiors of buildings and structures;
Primes walls, makes plastering repairs, putties nail holes and cracks and glazes windows before painting;
Erects scaffolds;
Performs finishing, lacquering, enameling, and calcimining jobs;
Fills, shellacs, and varnishes desks, tables, furniture, floors and trim;
Mixes and tints all types of paints;
Cleans brushes and equipment;
Estimates and orders materials and stores supplies.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and accident precautions of the painting trade; working knowledge of the health and safety regulations of the trade including OSHA, ability to operate power painting equipment; ability to rig and work from scaffolds; ability to lay out work for self and others; ability to mix and tint paints; ability to perform quality workmanship; good color perception; ability to kneel, bend, twist, crouch and crawl; ability to work outside, at heights and in cramped/awkward locations, from ladders and scaffolding; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus two (2) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience as a journeyman painter.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
