DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work responsible for installing and repairing glass in school buildings including windows, mirrors, desk and table tops and display cases. Work is performed in accordance with applicable health and safety standards such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher level tradesperson or other senior staff member. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
Reads job orders and blueprints to determine type, size, shape and location of glass to be installed;
Measures and cuts glass to specifications in shop or at job site;
Orders glass cut to size when work cannot be done on site;
Prepares installation site by attaching/replacing frames, moldings, or channels to accept new glass;
Independently or with assistance, fits glass in place, and finishes by applying glazing compounds/gasket materials and weather seals;
Adjusts door and window operation as necessary after glass is installed;
Operates polishing/grinding and other tools and equipment as appropriate to the project.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in glazing and glass installation; good knowledge of health and safety regulations as related to the glazing trade including OSHA; good knowledge of the types and sizes of a variety of glass; good knowledge of building codes as related to the glazing trade; good knowledge of basic math; ability to see flaws in glass prior to installation; ability to match glass types to the project; ability to cut straight angles and curves to replace broken glass; ability to operate glazing tools and equipment; ability to work outside in all weather conditions from the ground, ladders or scaffolding; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain working relationships; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
(A) Five (5) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience in installing, repairing, and replacing glass that involves measuring and cutting glass; OR,
(B) Two (2) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience of journey level work in the glazing trade; OR,
(C) Certification by the National Glass Association as a Level III Master Glazer.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Depending on the position duties, candidates for employment may be required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid license to operate a vehicle in New York State, or otherwise demonstrate your ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
