Hydroponic Grow Tower Study

Gardening for the future starts here!

This past year, my class embarked on a very cool journey which led to our class housing 5 hydroponic towers! We embarked on this journey by signing up for the "Let's Talk Science" action project called "Living Space". (I describe this also in the Space Challenges section of this website). Part of the "Living Space" project involves examining your classroom environment, with regards to CO2 levels, humidity levels, and temperature. When we examined our class results data, we realized that our CO2 levels were abnormally high, and our humidity levels were very low. Another teacher in the school, who was experimenting with hydroponics, had dealt with a company who were setting him up with grow towers. We then approached him with our ideas - that by incorporating grow towers in our classroom, we could decrease the CO2 levels and increase humidity, simply by growing lettuce! And guess what? It worked!! And we also ate salad! It was a fantastic learning experience for both myself and my class, and we plan on doing it again this coming year.

To get involved, look for local hydroponics companies to help you get started! Our contact here in Renfrew County that we worked with was Eric and Kate Dionne at "Kate and Eric Grow For You Inc".
