Instrumental Music Materials
In order to participate in band and orchestra, your child will need the following. Scroll down the page to read about the required materials to participate as well as recommended materials. You'll also find a listing of music stores and their phone numbers for you to call around and find these materials so your child starts the school year with the materials they need to be successful on their music instrument.
Required: Music Instrument
You can get an instrument from Zeswitz Music (see below), or other musical instrument distributor. We highly recommend choosing the 9 month lease option. This will cover you through the spring performances. Each school has a limited number of instruments available for loan. Please contact your teacher for more information.
Be cautious with online purchases! There are many imitators of musical instruments on the market from all around the world. A guideline to follow: be wary of purchasing an instrument where you can buy food or clothing.
When shopping for music instrument providers consider asking the following:
Does the music store pick-up and drop-off weekly at the school building?
Does the music store provide repair service included in the instrument rental price?
Does the music store provide a loaner instrument at no additional cost during a repair for your child to repair. Some stores do not provide loaner instruments, so students are left without an instrument to practice during the repair.
Does 100% the monthly rental cost go directly towards the eventual purchase of the instrument or the purchase of an instrument upgrade?
PERCUSSIONISTS
Students learning drums or mallets will need a "percussion kit" (pictured at right) which is a musical instrument kit that contains
a bell set and stand to rest the bells on
a snare drum and stand to rest the drum on
a rubber practice pad that lies flat on the top of the drum,
drum sticks for the drum,
and mallets for the bell set.
When you contact a music store using our store listings at the bottom of this page, please ask your store representative how to place an order for a percussion kit that includes a bell set and a snare drum, not just a drum practice pad, to make sure your child can continue to have the learning materials required to participate in the band program.
Using your own family musical instrument:
Having an instrument in good working order will help your child start the school year off right in band class. Below are some common problems seen with music instruments in disrepair.
Woodwinds: air leaks, pad worms, dried-out corks, old reeds
Brass: jammed tuning slide, jammed valve slides, jammed valves
Help your child stay on pace in band class by taking your instrument to a music store so it is ready to play. Ask your music store for use of a loaner instrument if the repair will last more than several days. The loaner helps your child continue to practice during the repair.
Required: Method Book
Elementary band students will need the Habits of A Successful Beginner Band Musician for their respective instrument.
6th and 7th grade band students need Essential Elements For Band Book 1 for their respective instrument.
Baritone Horn students need the B.C. (bass clef) Baritone book 1.
Snare Drummers and Bell Players will learn how to play each others instruments and will use the Essential Elements Book 1 for Percussion
Orchestra students use the Sound Innovations lesson book.
4th & 5th grade Band Book
Orchestra Students:
Elementary, SGC & Strayer Beginning Orchestra
Strayer & Sixth Grade Center Band Book
Strayer Orchestra
Required: Music Stand
A folding music stand is necessary for home practice. We will also use them for full band rehearsals and also our full band concert performances.
Required: Cleaning Supplies
Most of the following cleaning and maintenance supplies are included with instrument rental contracts. If you are not renting an instrument be sure to share these supplies with a music store or contact your child's music teacher for help using the information on our Contact page.
Flute: cleaning rod and cloth
Clarinet: drop cloth, cork grease, at least 2 reeds
Bass Clarinet: drop cloth, cork grease, at least 2 reeds
Alto Sax: neck strap, drop cloth, cork grease, at least 2 reeds
Tenor Sax: neck strap, drop cloth, cork grease, at least 2 reeds
Baritone Sax: neck strap, drop cloth, cork grease, at least 2 reeds
Trumpets: valve oil, tuning slide grease
Trombone: slide grease, tuning slide grease
Baritone Horn: valve oil, tuning slide grease
Tuba: valve oil, tuning slide grease
Percussion: In the SGC all students learn drum and mallets to train to be a whole-percussionist.
A percussion kit is therefore needed for the SGC. This kit includes drums a drum and glockenspiel. Drum pads are great to have for practice but a percussion kit with a real snare drum will be needed for concert performances.
Recommended: Metronome
This learning tool will help your child learn to play to the steady beat as they practice with it every day. Students can also use online metronomes or metronome mobile apps; however, many students find an external metronome with a light, kickstand, and earphone jack very helpful
Music Stores
Questions to ask music instrument stores when shopping for instrument contracts:
Does the rental price include in the rental price pick-up/drop-off to my child's school?
Does the rental price include instrument repairs?
Is a "loaner instrument" provided while my child's instrument is repaired so they do not miss lessons?
What percentage of the rental fee is put towards the eventual purchase of the instrument?
If my child quits one instrument and wants to try a different instrument, can the money I've been paying towards instrument ownership be transferred to owning the new instrument?
The Quakertown Community School District partners with Zeswitz Music in Reading, PA. While you are not required to get your band instrument or materials from Zeswitz Music, there are advantages of doing so such as the maintenance policy for repairs due to normal usage or minor accidental damage. Representatives from the music store visit the Quakertown schools each week to make sure that everything is in working order. Instruments leased from Zeswitz Music will be delivered to the school for the start of the school year. Please be sure to sign up before July 1st in order to guarantee an instrument for the beginning of the school year. We highly recommend choosing the 9 month trial so your child will have the instrument for the entire school year and can participate in spring performances.

Paying-off your instrument for ownership: It really does depends on the instrument for payoffs, but it takes about 2 years or more to pay off the instrument. Factors that play into that are brand of the rental, is it a new instrument, and instrument group. Should your child decide to learn a different instrument, your rental payments that have been building towards music instrument ownership on their first instrument can be transferred to the new instrument's rent-to-own agreement. Please contact your child's music teacher and/or contact Zeswitz with any questions or for more details about this before canceling your child's instrument contract.
The QCSD Music Department receives no sales reimbursement or anything such as a sales commission for endorsing Zeswitz' services as a partner with our district's music program. Zeswitz is our QCSD Music Department's primary instrument services provider based on a history of high-quality repairs, their communication with families about school drop-off/pick-up for repairs, high-quality instruments available in their instrument rental inventory, a rent-to-own program, competitive pricing, providing folder donations to our music students, sponsoring the "Meet the Instruments" night event, and positive feedback from their customers, who are our own music students' families.
Although the QCSD Music Department strongly recommends using Zeswitz for the reasons listed above, QCSD families can get their music instrument from ANY music store vendor. Below are other local music stores families are welcome to investigate, and some stores have reached out to provide rental information for this web page.
