Social Studies

All students receiving special education services will be enrolled in a Social Studies course for each year of middle school. Below are the descriptions for small group Social Studies courses. If a student qualifies for in class support classes, those students will be enrolled in a general education Social Studies course which contains a general education teacher as well as a special education teacher.

Small Group Social Studies 6:

Students learn and focus on the key topics covered in the general education curriculum while working to enhance reading, writing, and comprehension skills through reading primary sources and focusing on historical thinking. The students also focus on map skills. The following topics are a focus during 6th grade social studies: continents, oceans, latitude and longitude; Maya, Aztec, and Inca Civilizations; and cultures of different countries around the world focusing on how they are the same/different from our own in the United States. 

Small Group Social Studies 7:

Students learn and focus on the key topics covered in the general education curriculum while continuing to work to enhance reading, writing, and comprehension skills through reading primary sources. The students also focus on map skills and historical thinking. The following topics are a focus during 7th grade social studies: early man and the beginning of civilization, civilizations of Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, and civilizations of the Ancient Greeks and Romans including mythology. 

Small Group Social Studies 8:

Students learn and focus on the key topics covered in the general education curriculum while continuing to work to enhance reading, writing, and comprehension skills through reading primary sources. The students also focus on historical thinking and interpretation of documents. The following topics are a focus during 8th grade social studies: exploration and the 13 Colonies, the American Revolution, the beginnings of the country including the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, the Founding Fathers along with other historical key figures throughout history, the Presidency including key events during Presidents Washington-Lincoln, and the Civil War and Reconstruction.
