English Language Arts

All students receiving special education services will be enrolled in an ELA course for each year of middle school. Below are the descriptions for small group ELA courses. If a student qualifies for in class support classes, those students will be enrolled in a general education ELA course which contains a general education teacher as well as a special education teacher.

Small Group ELA 6:

In English students work on several writing assignments including narrative, informational, and opinion. Students work on proofreading and editing, grammar, spelling, and phonics through the Read 180 program. The two units of study are Standing Up for Our Rights, and Water Fight. Students will read the following types of literature: fiction/nonfiction and informational. Students will complete a novel study of fictional literature. This class is designed to enhance the reading/writing, comprehension, analysis and vocabulary skills through multiple sources of integration. 

Small Group ELA 7:

In English students work on several writing assignments including narrative, essays, informational, and research. Students work on proofreading and editing, grammar, spelling, and phonics through the Read 180 program. The two units of study are Dystopia and Historical. Students will read the following types of literature: fiction/nonfiction and informational/historical. Students will also complete novel studies on dystopian/fictional literature. This class is designed to enhance the reading/writing, comprehension, analysis and vocabulary skills through multiple sources of integration. 

Small Group ELA 8:

In English students work on several writing assignments including narrative, essays, informational, and argumentative. Students work on proofreading and editing, grammar, spelling, and phonics through the Read 180 program. The two units of study are Contagious Diseases and Extreme Sports. Students will read the following types of literature: fiction/nonfiction and informational. Students will also complete novel studies on historical literature. This class is designed to enhance the reading/writing, comprehension, analysis and vocabulary skills through multiple sources of integration. 

ESL (English as a Second Language):

Our program offers English language learners acquisition and practice of English. Students will develop language proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Lessons are curtailed for individual students’ needs  in the social,  instructional and academic language.
