Life Skills Program

Students enrolled in the Life Skills Program will follow a set course of study including English, Math, Reading, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, RTI, and elective courses.

English:

In English, students work on their writing, communication, and spelling skills. Students primarily work on sentence structure, alphabetical order, proofreading/editing, vocabulary in context, encoding/spelling, and grammar. Students also work on a variety of major writing assignments throughout the year that focus on procedural writing, research/opinion writing, and narrative writing.

Math:

Middle School Mathematics is designed to be the foundation for future advanced mathematics courses.  The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards and the Common Core Standards will be implemented within the curriculum.  These goals include learning to value mathematics and gain confidence in one’s ability to do math; use higher level thinking skills in problem solving; reason mathematically and algebraically and communicate algebraically both in written and oral forms.

Reading:

In reading class, students will participate in a corrective reading program to assist with their specific reading difficulties. Students will work on decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills. Students will also participate in a novel study where they will work on their oral reading skills as well as participate in various activities that relate to the book(s) that they are reading.

Social Studies:

In Social Studies, students study United States History. Topics from pre-colonization, early exploration, the American Revolution, the Civil War, reconstruction, the Industrial Revolution, WWI, the Great Depression, and WWII are covered. There is a focus on key historical concepts while identifying the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when, and why). Students also learn basic geography, map, and data based questioning skills.

Science:

Students will gain a basic understanding of general science concepts and how science works in the world around them.  Some topics that are covered in science class are: Earth and Space Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. While learning science facts, students work on the following skills: reading comprehension of informational texts, vocabulary development, and reading charts/diagrams.

Physical Education:

In Physical Education, students will learn the fundamentals and skills for lifelong fitness. Students will participate in a variety of different forms of exercise and also implement self growth activities such as team building and mindfulness.

RTI:

The RTI Program is designed for students in grades six through eight. In each respective course, skills are reviewed and reinforced. The purpose of the course is to help struggling readers and problem solvers become more confident and develop an appreciation for reading and mathematics. As the grade levels progress, the courses continue to place importance in bridging any gaps in skill development of the grade-level curriculum with the flexibility to reinforce or extend concepts and skills based on students' needs.
