WORLD LANGUAGE PROGRAM

NJ Student Learning Standards in World Language

STANDARD 7.1 (Communication) - All students will be able to communicate in at least one World Language in addition to English. They will use language to engage in conversation, understand and interpret spoken and written language, present information, concepts, and ideas while making connections with other disciplines, and compare the language/culture studied with their own.

STANDARD 7.2 (Culture) - All students will demonstrate an understanding of the perspectives of a culture(s) through experiences with its products and practices.

· Students MUST successfully complete one year of World Languages in order to fulfill graduation requirements.

· Many accredited colleges require a minimum of two consecutive years in a single World Language.

German 1 - Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: None

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits: 5

This academic course introduces the German language with emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, culture, and conversation. In addition to verbal communication skills, students will work to enhance skills in reading, writing, and listening in German. Students will be required to increase their communication skills through communication in the target language.

German 2 - Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: German 1

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits: 5

This academic continuation of the language stresses the improvement and expansion of German language skills through written and oral assignments. In addition to verbal communication skills, students will work to enhance skills in reading, writing, and listening in German. Students will be required to increase their communication skills through continued communication in the target language.

German 3/Honors - Grade Level: 10-12 Weighted Course

Prerequisite: See Course Prerequisite Section—Page 7.

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits: 5

This advanced German language course stresses the improvement and expansion of written and oral skills. In addition to verbal communication skills, students will work to enhance skills in reading, writing, and listening in German. Students will be required to increase their communication skills through continued communication in the target language.

AP German – Grade Level 11-12 Weighted Course

Prerequisite: See Course Prerequisite Section—Page 7.

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits: 5

This advanced German language course will review and complete basic and advanced grammar, key vocabulary and sentence patterns, moving students to conversational proficiency. Students will continue to enhance their skills in reading, writing, and oral communication. This course offers independent study opportunities to students in multiple forms, all focusing on target language proficiency.

Spanish 1 - Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: None

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits: 5

This academic course introduces the Spanish language with emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, culture, and conversation. In addition to verbal communication skills, students will work to enhance skills in reading, writing, and listening in Spanish. Students will be required to increase their communication skills through communication in the target language.

Spanish 2 – Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Spanish 1

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits: 5

In addition to verbal communication skills, students will work to enhance skills in reading, writing, and listening in Spanish. Students will be required to increase their communication skills through continued communication in the target language.

Spanish 3/Honors - Grade Level: 10-12 Weighted Course

Prerequisite: See Course Prerequisite Section—Page 7.

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits: 5

This advanced Spanish language course stresses the improvement and expansion of written and oral skills with an extensive focus on vocabulary and grammar. In addition to verbal communication skills, students will work to enhance skills in reading, writing, and listening in Spanish in preparation for Spanish 4/AP. Students will be required to increase their communication skills through continued communication in the target language.

AP Spanish - Grade Level: 11-12 Weighted Course

Prerequisite: See Course Prerequisite Section—Page 7.

Duration: 200 minutes/week Credits 5

This advanced academic course reviews all grammar and vocabulary. Students will summarize authentic written and oral sources through projects, oral presentations, compositions and research. By September 30, students must choose their course of study: AP Spanish or Spanish 4 Honors. Those students who qualify for AP Spanish will be required to sit for the AP exam at the end of the year.
