Special Education Program

SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

ENGLISH

Resource Center/Small Group Instruction English classes are offered within the special education department: a Resource Center/Small Group Instruction program for those students who require additional academic supports. The instruction in these classes follow and differentiate the English Curriculum for each grade level.

LIFE SKILLS ENGLISH

Students assigned to the Resource Center Life Skills English course within the special education department require more intensive skill development within the language arts spectrum than found in the curriculum design of the Resource Center English program. The focus of this program is to enhance students reading, reference and oral and written communication skills. Emphasis is placed on everyday life functioning. To assist students to gain the knowledge and understanding of the content material, instruction and assessments are designed to meet the learning levels and learning styles of the students.

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Adaptive Physical Education program will seek to develop the student's self control, self confidence, sportsmanship, respect for others, as well as a knowledge of basic motor skills and movements. The student will learn strategies which enhance performance levels and gain a general appreciation for physical fitness.

SCIENCE

Resource Center/Small Group Instruction Science classes are offered within the special education department: a Resource Center/Small Group Instruction program for those students who require additional academic supports. The instruction in these classes follow and differentiate the Science Curriculum for each grade level/subject area.

LIFE SKILLS SCIENCE

Students assigned to the Resource Center Life Skills Science course within the special education department require more intensive skill development with regard to science than found in the curriculum design of the Resource Center Science program. The program is designed to teach basic science skills in the areas of Biology, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Chemistry through a wide variety of experiences including hands-on experiments, demonstrations, discussions, lab activities, class notes, cooperative learning, and technology. To assist students to gain the knowledge and understanding of the content material, instruction and assessment will be designed to meet the learning levels and learning styles of the students.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Resource Center/Small Group Instruction Social Studies classes are offered within the special education department: a Resource Center/Small Group Instruction program for those students who require additional academic supports. The instruction in these classes follow and differentiate the Social Studies Curriculum for each grade level.

LIFE SKILLS SOCIAL STUDIES

Students assigned to the Resource Center Life Skills Social Studies course within the special education department require more intensive skill development with regard to social studies than found in the curriculum design of the Resource Center Social Studies program. The program is designed to provide students with basic knowledge and skills in world cultures, geography, civics, and history so they can become responsible citizens and contributing members of their communities. To assist students to gain the knowledge and understanding of the content material, instruction and assessments are designed to meet the learning levels and learning styles of the students.

MATHEMATICS

Resource Center/Small Group Instruction Math classes are offered within the special education department: a Resource Center/Small Group Instruction program for those students who require additional academic supports. The instruction in these classes follow and differentiate the Math Curriculum for each grade level.

LIFE SKILLS MATHEMATICS

Students assigned to the Resource Center Life Skills Mathematics course within the special education department require more intensive skill development with regard to mathematics than found in the curriculum design of the Resource Center Mathematics program. The focus of the course includes but is not limited to the enhancement of students’ knowledge and understanding of services provided by banks and other lending institutions and credit cards, the computation and concepts involved in paychecks, budgets and money handling. To assist students to gain the knowledge and understanding of the content material, instruction and assessments are designed to meet the learning levels and learning styles of the students.

SPANISH

This Small Group Instruction course is designed for communication at a basic literacy level in Spanish. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between the language and the culture. This course is for students who need a slower paced learning environment.

COMPUTER BASICS & LANGUAGE

Students taking this class will learn computer language and basic practical computer skills that will assist them in their daily living. These skills will include the following: computer terminology, keyboarding, word processing, letter writing, researching, and using software applications. In addition, students will use Spanish language software in order to learn basic Spanish.

TRANSITION

This course of study is offered to students in the eleventh or twelfth grades. The primary focus of this program is to assist students to prepare for a successful transition from school to work. Instruction will be provided in areas that include but are not limited to assist students to enhance their knowledge and ability to prepare for a career, seek a job, prepare for an interview, sustain a job, and advocate for one’s self. Consumer skills will also be emphasized in this course.

STUDY SKILLS

The study skills class is designed to assist classified students as a support to their academic courses. Students will receive assistance in basic study skills including organization, outlining, problem-solving, and independence. Reinforcement of previously taught material as well as homework help will also be available for students who need this accommodation.
